And you're a Stephen King fan? I love Stephen King! My favourite book by him is "Misery".

Read all three, loved all three, but Christine is probably my favourite out of those. They NEEEED to bring tail fins back! Tail fins were awesome!

Dead Zone is another good one. So many feels.

Allllll the feels. How about Insomnia? And Carrie of course!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Contrast-Necrobat In reply to InfinitelyRabbit [2016-01-29 11:28:03 +0000 UTC]

I'm reading Carrie right now! xD

I've got this book (one of my most prized possessions) that has The Shining, Carrie, and Misery bundled together. I read it every once in a while if there isn't anything new around.

Really liked Insomnia, especially the idea of an invisible world overlapping with the "real" world.

Green Mile! Oh jeez, that book nearly killed me. The movie, too. So intense.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfinitelyRabbit In reply to Contrast-Necrobat [2016-01-29 12:25:14 +0000 UTC]

Sweet! I have the combo book of Carrie and the Tommyknockers. I love rereading it so much, it was my mum's copy from agesssss ago. She gave it to me when I started getting into Stephen King. But man, yeah, loved Insomnia, especially moments like when he was digging through that truck looking for fetuses, it was so intense! And the balloon cutters! Green Mile, yassss, I even loved the film for that one! How about Cujo? I love the layers of relationships going on and then, god, Cujo! Felt so bad when that bat caught him!

What was your favourite moment in Misery?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Contrast-Necrobat In reply to InfinitelyRabbit [2016-01-29 12:39:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh, Cujo! It was so sad because Cujo wasn't really a "villian" at all, he was just sick. It really got to me because we had a St Bernard when I was a kid. His name was Samajoor (that means "Sergeant Major" in Afrikaans). Wow, we loved that dog.

My favourite moment in Misery is probably the part where Paul works so hard to get to the door and pick the lock for the first time, despite his busted legs. It's such a nice way to show his determination, perseverance, and resourcefulness all at once. When I read it for the first time, I kept screaming, "Go, man, go! You can do it! Just a little bit further!!" xD

Another book I loved was "It". That story in particular had such a good way of telling two tales at once (the past and the present), and bringing them all together.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfinitelyRabbit In reply to Contrast-Necrobat [2016-01-29 12:46:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know! Cujo was heartbreaking. I've always loved St Bernard dogs, they're so lovely and friendly. I think also because I have a dog, it hit a little harder as well (A gorgeous little staffie named Scooby Doo) and I could not bear her getting hurt like that.Β

That is a really great moment, isn't it? I was gasping for air at points, but Misery was really good. XD

I did like It, but I feel the film's second half got a little....meh. XD And how about Cell? Man, the way that she held that little shoe as she died really stayed with me!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Contrast-Necrobat In reply to InfinitelyRabbit [2016-01-29 12:58:49 +0000 UTC]

Movies based off Stephen King's books are usually hit and miss. Some are amazing, but some are just awful, which is a real shame. My favourite movie adaptations of his work have to be Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me.

Ooh! And Pet Cemetery! Me and my sister stayed up late one night to watch it. I was probably only nine or ten at the time, way too young for a movie like that. Afterwards we were both so scared we couldn't even go down the pitch black hallway to get back to our rooms, but we couldn't turn on the lights either or our parents would catch us, so we ended up shuffling through the dark, clinging to each other like a pair of old people. xD

I loved the way the action in Cell took off right from the start. Stephen King has done some apocalypse work before (The Stand comes to mind), but I really liked the rapid chaos that came with Cell.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfinitelyRabbit In reply to Contrast-Necrobat [2016-01-29 13:05:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I agree with that. It's a shame because some of them could have been absolutely brilliant. Pet Cemetery is one I've wanted to read for a long time! I'd like to read it before watch it though, as I like comparing books to films which is usually cry-worthy. XD

I read a short story novella type book called Different Seasons, I believe, and honestly there was one based around nazi's that made me cringe when one of the character throws a cat into an oven! That made me feel sick. XD

Sames, I loved Cell. I was reading it without stopping because I was so damn into it.Β

Contrast-Necrobat In reply to InfinitelyRabbit [2016-01-29 13:13:39 +0000 UTC]

I think that one's "Apt Pupil", and yes, it's very disturbing (it has a movie adaptation, too). For me, the most uncomfortable part was when there was a leak in one of the gas pipes, so the concentration camp victims didn't die right away. I think it got to me because stuff like that really did happen.

Another King book I love is "On Writing", one of his few non-fiction works. It helped me so much when I first starting writing seriously. Absolutely filled with useful, practical hints and tips.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfinitelyRabbit In reply to Contrast-Necrobat [2016-01-29 13:22:37 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I have, "On writing," also, it was recommended on the uni course I'm on, along with a few others I can recommend when I get home later. Yeah, that was very uncomfortable for me as well, and I understand. I think I would feel kind of bad writing about that kind of thing because it was real, but it hasn't stopped me on subjects like rape which are still very common. I think it's because I like raising awareness that it still goes on and also kind of showing that a character can either rise against it or fall under it and let it consume them.

Contrast-Necrobat In reply to InfinitelyRabbit [2016-01-29 13:33:05 +0000 UTC]

I understand completely. I sometimes have to write about some really nasty stuff, and this might sound silly, but I always feel so guilty afterwards! >.<
I know they're just fictional characters, but I still feel responsible for the stuff that happens to them.

Something a lot people don't always realise is the amount of research that goes into writing uncomfortable scenes like that. Sometimes you need to talk to people who have gone through difficult times, and that makes it so much more "real" than if you just sit in front of the computer and make up a bunch of stuff without any proper insight.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfinitelyRabbit In reply to Contrast-Necrobat [2016-01-29 13:44:09 +0000 UTC]

I know right? Like when I was younger, it used to be, "popular" for that kind of content in fanfiction, so I used it then. I went through some nasty stuff as a kid, so if I wrote it, I was a bit shaky. Sames though, now when I read it back, it's not as bad as I thought it was, but still. I really should delete them and start a new slate.Β

Yeah, totally. Especially in location, people, etc, etc. People need to get facts right. Luckily, I tend to go into fantasy more than anything, so I can get away from, "Real" places, but I always like to use a base and some real details from places I've been. Not to mention, you have to think from realistic points of view. Just because this person thinks this way, doesn't mean that person will always agree with them, so to speak, so... yeah. XD It's more than plot. It's research, character, location, etc.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Contrast-Necrobat In reply to InfinitelyRabbit [2016-01-29 14:07:49 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't agree more. I also like to use fantasy to escape from the humdrum world. I just find it so much more exciting and exhilarating to explore a world unbound by any rules, where literally anything is possible as long as you can imagine it. Adding your own personal experiences to your writing, however, can do wonders to enrich the story because it gives the reader something more concrete to relate to, something he/she can look at and say, "I know exactly what that feels like."

I often use my home town in fiction without even realizing it at times. It just seems that every time I need to write about a mountain, or a valley, or a town I always default to the area I grew up in, but in a form that I can shape however I want. There aren't many things that can give you a sense of freedom like that, but writing is definitely one of them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfinitelyRabbit In reply to Contrast-Necrobat [2016-01-29 14:33:46 +0000 UTC]

Agreed! The real world is so depressing as it is, why can't we just fully escape from it to another world that's just more magical or beautiful? The ideal world, without extreme pollution, or even with it, to make a point.

I do exactly the same thing. Living in a small village, I've actually used that in one of my short stories coming out soon this year and even my old home in Grimsby is making an appearance as Amy's home, but edited to suit the needs of the plot. I really enjoy using it, because subconsciously you're telling readers about yourself and your life without even thinking about it, and in a way, it's nice. Not only do you get a beautiful fantasy, you get a real chunk of the author in your head.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Contrast-Necrobat In reply to InfinitelyRabbit [2016-01-29 14:54:06 +0000 UTC]

I believe that every element of every story ever written contains at least one small piece of the author (or sometimes a big piece). This is part of what makes writing so liberating, but it's also what makes it terrifying sometimes. When you write something, you're taking a part of yourself and manifesting it into the real world. If you want to show it to someone, upload it to the internet, or even get it published, you're exposing a piece of yourself you would ordinarily keep hidden. That's what makes it so scary, because anyone can come along and trample all over a piece of your soul without even understanding why it's so important to you. But that's also part of being a writer. Sometimes people criticise your work, and you have to be strong enough to grow from it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfinitelyRabbit In reply to Contrast-Necrobat [2016-01-29 15:04:25 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! You grow with your writing, but you also have to be careful not to push out the things too delicate for you to withstand insult too. If you can take criticism, you can take almost anything. You can improve, you can get stronger and you grow a thicker skin and higher tolerance.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Contrast-Necrobat In reply to InfinitelyRabbit [2016-01-29 15:12:08 +0000 UTC]

I've been really lucky in that regard. So far no one has said anything mean about my work, but that might just be because hardly anyone reads it. xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfinitelyRabbit In reply to Contrast-Necrobat [2016-01-29 15:14:39 +0000 UTC]

Aw.... people on the internet don't really tend to get much feedback unfortunately. -.- Things like fanfic are more what people look into. I've had the odd once or twice, but I don't think I'm too bad, all things considered.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Contrast-Necrobat In reply to InfinitelyRabbit [2016-01-29 15:30:41 +0000 UTC]

I don't have anything against fanfic or the people who enjoy writing and reading it. It's just frustrating sometimes when I work really hard on something original and barely get any views, and then I see a horrible piece of MLP x Naruto lemon fic filled with spelling and grammar errors get thousands of views and hundreds of faves.

I know I shouldn't feel that way, but I can't help but shake my head when that happens.

I'm not the kind of guy who stays bummed out for long, though. It's not about the views or the faves. It's about the work, and doing your very best to create something special.

My dream is to write something so good that it'll be made into a movie. Then maybe, someday, people will be writing fanfics about MY work. That'll be so hilarious. xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfinitelyRabbit In reply to Contrast-Necrobat [2016-01-29 17:25:12 +0000 UTC]

I feel the same way. XD I used to write a lot of it for practice, but I do get annoyed when I see fanfics like that. I'll click on, skim the first bit and decide on that whether or not I'm going to bother with it. These days, I swear that the writing is getting worse. *sigh*Β

For me, I would love the views and people enjoying it, because it is creating something special, but it's also for rocketing me so I can hopefully stay alive a little longer after I'm dead. I know, I know. XD Sounds whacked.Β

I would love something to be made into a movie, and I'd love fanfics, but NOT smut. I wouldn't want my characters used and abused like that because for most of them it would be extremely out of character. I can't blame the odd scene, but not stuff directly dedicating to fucking my characters every which way. It's derogatory to me that I would take time to create great characters and people would just smash 'em together to get reviews. Β Of course, I used to fanfic, and I did do some, but I changed it to MAKE it in character. I'd build up, give background etc etc.Β
