Its nice to see that my favorite artist on dA is at SCAD, its encouraging. Well my dream job would be a concept artist but it looks like Interactive Design and Game Dev, Animation, or graphic design with a minor in Illustration so I can get my drawing skills up and perhaps leave that concept idea open. Whats is your major? So ya as you can see I'm not entirely sure right now but I am narrowing it down every day. What is your major?

well first off, thanks. Ok, so heres the deal, i also want to do concept art. 90% or more of the stuff you see on my deviant art page is from me teaching and directing myself. I also wasn't doing what im doing now until about a year and a half ago i decided to switch my major from aimation to illustration. Although illustration at scad is not conceptual at all, its more technique, and about editorial, and general freelance illustration for that , advertising, childrens books, and so on. Frankly they barely teach you any art techniques in that department. They charish 'style' over 'ability' which translates to most of the kids cant and will never learn to draw. At first the most you will learn about drawing is from the foundations classes, theres about a years worth of those. If you want to get into concept art, id make Sequential either your major or minor. That is the major you will learn the most about, and be forced to draw in styles relavent to the field. I didn't get into concept art full on until i took a class in sequential, storyboarding, where we happen to watch a video on Space Ship drawing. If you wind up liking scad Atlanta, don't transfer to scad Savannah. I would only transfure if you have to. Im transfuring to ATL because its better location and facilities, location in relation to jobs and such. Savannah is very isolating, and easy to get sucked into. Although it will be up to you. It will be up to you to get what you want out of college as well. For me its been the contacts and social experience thats been the most helpful. Start getting into concept art by looking at actual concept art, everyday.

Thanks for taking the time to tell me all this! I am trying to talk to as many SCAD students and grads as I can to get an idea of what to do and what to expect. Was that video by any chance the one by Feng Zhu made by gnomon (I think I remember you mentioning it in a journal at some point)? Are there any specific courses or things you would suggest taking\doing early on at SCAD?

Yes, it was that dvd. It was good times. Take drawing, drawing, and more drawing. All of the classes for the majors are intro classes at your level, you really wont do much until later on in regards to what ever major you choose. Other then that practicing. Draw everyday, draw things you see. I can tell you anything you think you have hard time at drawing will get easier if you draw it 10 times a day or more. I do know that scad Atlanta owns the entire Gnomon DVD collection, i believe its in the ACA library. I will most definitely be checking them out. Once you get to school if you see someone drawing politely ask them questions, thats the best and fastest way to learn. Take the time after class to ask the professor questions. You will learn the most from this.
