You're welcome. Although, it's been about a week since I was last on dA, from memory, so I've forgotten what you're saying thank you for. But if it's for adding you to my then what can I say? I like your stuff.

Thanks. I think seascapes are my favourite subject too - there's something about experiencing the scene rather than just pressing the shutter release. It's relaxing and humbling.

i agree, but i must admit the last time i went to take photos there where lots of moisquitos at the location i planned to shoot at and they really where bad, i cold of sworn i had a whole swarm around me they where that bad. but i still have to get those photos developed from that shoot. (thats right, film)

I keep tropic-strength insect repellent & 30+ sunscreen, among other things, in my camera bag. But I understand where you're coming from - seemingly little things can so often throw you off & ruin the serenity.

And I've heard about the film stuff - they used to use it back in the "olden days" didn't they? Just kidding; I was shooting 35mm film (although not very much I confess) before going digital about 4 years ago, but digital is just so convenient now (haven't picked up my SLR for at least 3 years).

The pictures with the sun in the background are those sun rises? I'm curious about which direction it is facing because the colors are amazing! And very nice with the rocks and cliffs leading out into the endless open sea!

sqlnerd In reply to oglaend [2009-03-05 03:28:47 +0000 UTC]

The vast majority of the twilight or very low-angled light shots I do are sunrise. I'm much more of a dawn person than a dusk person. I have one shot on dA which is sunset and one which was shot early afternoon , but the rest of them are sunrise or in the hour or so prior to sunrise.

I live on the east coast of Australia and so almost all my seascapes are shot looking east over the Pacific Ocean (with a couple looking north or south along the coast line). It really is a very beautiful part of the world.

oglaend In reply to sqlnerd [2009-03-05 21:17:00 +0000 UTC]

Ahh! The light is really different depending if its dawn or dusk. My coast is facing west you see. But also the colors varies a lot from the time of year doesn't it? And your geographical location How do you experience the colors from the different seasons of the year?

Indeed it is very beautiful! Your pictures are truly inspiring!

sqlnerd In reply to oglaend [2009-03-05 22:26:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

As you say, there are so many different factors that influence the quality of the light. I tend to find the location makes more of a difference than the season, other things being equal, and a particular location may usually yield a certain type of light at dawn that is quite different to some other place you shoot 20kms further along the coast. At least that's what I find - must be something environmental about the local area that usually produces certain cloud types or temperatures or humidity or air quality, etc.

The season tends to make less of a difference, in my experience, than the location itself. The biggest difference is what time in the middle of the night you need to get out of bed in order to be set up to shoot at nautical twilight (one of the minor downsides to shooting at dawn in summer).

oglaend In reply to sqlnerd [2009-03-29 00:48:51 +0000 UTC]

That's very interesting I am more aware of the sunsets now, as they are going down in my North Sea. The light varies a lot! From the rare times the sky is lit up red to the times the sun goes down behind cloud cover

The bad thing might be getting up early in summer, but in winter both dawn and dusk happens while I'm at work By the way, do you use a ND/grey filter and what's your experience with them?

Have a nice weekend!

sqlnerd In reply to oglaend [2009-03-30 04:20:13 +0000 UTC]

The light changes very quickly during sunrise & sunset here too. But I meant, other things being equal, shooting in winter at one spot will yield more similar result to that same spot in summer than shooting at different coastal locations during the same season. That's my experience anyway.

I often use a Cokin GND8 (3 stop soft) filter and sometimes a CP (cheapy brand). I'm not that happy with my filters (I have a couple other ND filters - a 1 stop & a 2 stop) but they produce such an awful pink colour cast that I just don't use them. If I want to reduce the amount of light coming through the lens (other than playing with the aperture and shutter speed of course) I put the CP on which accounts for about 1.5 stops I think (but the downside is it reduces reflections and sometimes that's what you're going for). Many times I can't get what I want in-camera and so I'll bracket the exposures and then blend the images in Photoshop to simulate/fake a decent, true neutral, GND filter; and that way I can selectively darken/lighten areas that I couldn't in-camera even with good filters.

Ideally I'd like to can the lot (even my Cokin GND8 is not great, but better than my other cheap filters) and invest in some Singh-Ray filters. But they don't come cheap and I just can't afford it at the moment (not with kids & mortgages & bills & inflation, etc., etc.). So I'll be making do with what I have for the foreseeable future. When some long lost rich benefactor leaves me my millions then I'll get my Singh-Rays & my good Manfrotto legs & heads & my D3 (or D700) and my beautiful Nikkor lenses (first on the list would be the 14-24/2.8 - drool...). A shame I can't buy skill & creativity.

Anyway, enough dreaming.

I see! I just learned a great deal!!
I am bothered with that the sky sometimes gets too bright and the ground becomes too dark. I have tried everything in photoshop to balance the light, but no good. My goal is to do as little as possible in photoshop with my pictures. So I'll have to try a graduated ND filter

Yea... I want another D3 so I won't have to switch lenses... (Joking). You could sell a kid or two though... (Joking again)! I sold my GF,,,

Creativity comes for free! So should girls.
And we should all be doctors so we could afford all the camera equipment we want

Thank you for sharing your wisdom!!
