Hey. I saw you are doing a history of Terra there. It's appreciated.
Not everybody hated Terra 2 "the elemental", but editors didn't seem to know what to do with her. Then Didio came along and had her killed, then tried to pretend she never existed. Rffzaargg..
But again, glad to see the chronology.

Thanks, I like both versions of Tara Markov, which is not a popular thing to say these days! I felt even T1 deserved more than a simple dismissal. So I thouht that going over her whole history would make it clear that there is more to the character than the Judas Contract - and the two are connected by fate if nothing else. Anyway I'm still working on Terra in the 2000s and will post it at that link as I finish it. Pass the link to all the Terra fans you know!

Well I certainly agree that T1 was terribly mishandled, put it that way.
I am probably the the only Terra 2 fanfic writer on dA. Thouh mostly so far I've been rewriting her story to suit me.
In any case, watching you now.

Thanks for watching. I feel that circulating some diff ideas about Terra on the web, based on the big picture might diminish the knee-jerk negative reaction to the character. Also the shipping wars around her are not helping.

Agreed, shipping wars don't help, but they're an inevitable consequence of fandom being what it is.

Well I was knee deep in fandom in the 90s. What exactly do you think changed?
I mentioned my fanfic here at dA, I'm also on a DC fanfic site where I got to pretty much "define" Terra for them.

What I'm doing here is just retelling Terra 2's in continuity stuff "my way", including her tenure in Lord Chaos' future. I just gave you a detailed post on what I did with her at DC2.

I'll read. May take me a few days, but am interested. Especially curious to see what you do with the Time Trapper and those Stratans digging Terra 1 up.
I still think they have T1's body on ice and aren't as nice as they seem to be.

Oh that's easy enough. Zero Hour never happens. No Time Trapper, no problem. She remains a girl from an alternate future.

Z. Hour was a mess, but I thought it would be interesting to see if T1 had revived in the grave and clawed her way out, like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Brion came back to life after dying and had amnesia due to his powers. If you ignore Wolfman and the retcons and read Terra 2 as if she's Terra 1 all the way through the 90s, either with amnesia or not, the stories take on a whole new dimension.

Yeah, the reason I didn't go with that is I didn't want Terra 2 to be responsible for Terra 1's crimes. The impression I got is what you described above is more or less what Geoff Johns wanted to do with the character but was editorially overruled.

I just started looking at your Resistance story - it's great! I like the war scenes with the royals wielding elemental powers.
I think Didio is missing a huge point with his current take on Brion. I'm convinced that Markovia is or should be the geo-counterpart to Atlantis. IE there ought to be four main elemental kingdoms in the DCU, with allied kingdoms (plants, animals, metals etc). The Atlee character is not well thought out in that regard. She is partly derived from aliens but is genetically identical to Terra 1 and 2. I don't think that the primary female earth elemental or earth elemental powers in their main conception should be alien in derivation.
Taking that elemental approach, Raven might be a daughter of fire or air. It would be a great hook for new stories and I wish DC would do it. I also think Gar could be recast as an animal elemental - channeling power of the animal kingdom. The pairing of earth and creatures that live on it is obvious (flora and fauna). That would bring in Swamp Thing, Constantine, warring elemental royal houses, diplomatic talks between different elementals...
As for Terra 1's crimes, I think Slade might be lying about some of that. Anyway I picked the Judas Contract and the 90s apart down to the last pebble in my blog continuity and found a lot of details and connections that aren't obvious at first glance.
Would love to do a fanfic about Terra being a recurring figure, kind of Countess Dracula figure who lives 700+ years and as an elemental lives several lives, complete with Markovian folk tale prophesies, etc.

Re ships - I meant that up to the 2000s it seems that ships were always of interest. But in the 2000s DC deliberately cultivated shipping wars in the fanbase and split the fanbase to generate sales. I may be wrong. I didn't collect regularly in the 90s and have only read the 90s back issues, not seen how fans responded at the time.
Re your fanfic very cool! I have a section in my history of Terra - the last part (not posted yet) that is devoted to Elseworlds treatments of the character. That includes the cartoon network/elseworlds stories/gaming and fanfics. I summarized some of the fanfics on DCNation about Terra. But if you let me know where your whole body of work on Terra is, would be happy to read and include link to it and a review in my history of the chararacter.

Arcalian In reply to tamaranorbust [2010-07-22 20:38:02 +0000 UTC]
Well, I'm in a number of fandoms and they're usually that petty and internally divided. I tended to blame the Terra ship situation on a) the implied Raven/Gar relationship in the cartoon and b) the explosion of the internet. The idea that DC encouraged this already existing condition is certainly possible however, and certainly nothing I would put past Dan "damnit" Didio.
The fansite in question is called DC2. I first did a literal Elseworlds treatment of the character, making her the first born legitimate child of the Markovian throne--but this is a Markovia that began world conquest at the tail end of World War I and never really stopped. She rebelled against her family line and formed the Titans as a Resistance movement. This title is still ongoing at this time, though the end is in sight. [link]
Having "made my bones" with Resistance, I was then allowed to define Terra in the site's regular continuity. In this timeline, Tara begins almost the same as Terra 1 did in "real" DC history, except that she was not so fundamentally psychotic. She was, however, still the unwanted bastard child of the Markovian throne, achieved her powers through Dr Jace, and did fall in with a bad superpowered criminal crowd, before eventually being captured by Geo-Force and Interpol, and being remanded to the Suicide Squad. She was a member of the Squad from issues #14-21 of that title [link] during which time the rift between her and canon T1 began to grow. Appearing in Teen Titans since issue #27 of that title [link] she then began to mellow in a T2 direction, where she remains to this day. The only T1 element of the character that remains prominent is her sexuality, which is focused on Gar.

That's amazing! I think the problem with fanfics of Terra is that very few people can get away from the Judas Contract. The stuff on DC Nation was a rehash of JC themes. But there a lots of other things about her that are important besides that.
I will read this and put a summary in the third part of my history of the character. May take a few weeks as it is along piece but will credit you (let me know if you have a preferred homepage url) and let you know when I do it.
Have you seen the latest DC Universe Legacies #2? There's a little plot in there about the Markovian crown jewels touring gotham museum and a portrait of a female Markovian royal in the background of a museum with blonde hair. It's set in the silver age.

I am such a fundemantal T2 fanboy that when she was killed in 52/WW3 I gave up on DC entirely, only reading past that point because my TT subscription had not yet expired. And I let it expire. I've kept my eyes on DC since then through the internet, but haven't heard anything that would convince me to come back.
DC2 is probably the site to link, if only because they need the "circulation", and I don't just mean my stuff, either.
Yeah, lots of people rehash JC, or worse yet only know the toon version and rehash *that*. As you know.
I would guess from your screen name that you were also a Starfire fan.

I was a huge fan of the NTT in the 80s, then stopped reading in the 90s when quality dropped - before Terra 2 showed up. I would check in to see what was going on but got interested in Peter Chung's work instead. Recently got back into it (got sucked in by that BN Titans 1 cover) bought the back issues and read the 90s and 2000s stories all in one go. The death of Terra 2 was so throwaway and cheap. Also did not like Raven's proximity to the incident. Nor the way Gar was written around those panels. It looked like he barely knew her - all wrong.
In the 80s Gar/Terra/Raven were my favourite characters, followed by Kory, Wally. But Raven was originally very diff than she is now, and I don't like what they've done with her. Don't like the ship with Gar, especially b/c of what she did to him in the Darkening. Don't like her crimes in the 90s and the fact that she was not held responsible when Terra is condemned forever. Compare to the noise they're making about Roy killing in Rise of A. Raven helped destroy Kory's whole planet - and murdered several people. She encouraged Gar to murder. Don't get me started on how wrong it is to just ignore that and make the focus some little ship bled over into the books from the cartoon.
My feeling is if you're going to condemn Terra 1, then Raven is far worse. Til that's fixed, the character is deeply wrong.

Be assured that if I had been around in the 80s, I would have screamed as loud as any at what happened to Terra 1. In fact that probably would have driven me away by itself,
But I came into comics somewhat late, by way of the first Tim Burton Batman film. As a result I started with Batman, and came into comics the *exact* same time Tim Drake did. At first it was about him, and the Titans were merely "that group Dick Grayson hangs out with."
I read the JC trade paperback, but didn't "get it". At that point, she was just a villaness that I saw die. Then I suffered through Titans Hunt. Then Terra 2 showed up, and started hitting on Changeling (and that is his name, as far as I'm concerned, Beast Boy is a title that should have been left in the 70s). Once she started doing that, I fell. I fell hard. I never got up.
And it was through Terra 2 that I finally "got" Terra 1, since on so many levels Terra 2 was the person that Terra 1 could/should have been.
The point you make about Terra 1 is perfectly valid; I beleive she made that point herself in JC before her betrayal was revealed, when the Titans were still not revealing all her secrets to her, pointing out Raven's heritage and the danger it posed. The "difference" of course, is that Wolfman and Perez *wanted* Terra 1 to be unredeemed and die. That was their plan all along, and to this day they are proud of it. As much as I might want to blame only Didio or you might want to blame the folks who ran DC in the 90s, the simple truth is this problem goes back further, JC being part of it. A "classic" story, yeah. A classic story of what is wrong with this industry. It goes back even further, of course; we could point to Roy shooting up, for example. And when did Marvel kill Gwen Stacy? I disremember. The point is, the industry has become so wrapped up in making heroes "real" and vulnerable, that they forgot what made heroes worthwhile in the first place.
My main thoughts on Raven are that she shouldn't be with Gar, and that her father should remain dead. In my DC2 regular Titans continuity title, I hooked her up with Wally.
I could have kept reading after Terra 2 died, for the sake of other characters. I could have given Atlee a chance. The reasons I didn't are a) That would be condoning what happened to Terra 2, and b) The way things are going, I think I can pretty well guess what will happen to Atlee, sooner or later. And I'm not going through that again.
