The SWAT Kats are your favorite cartoon characters? Kickass! That was one of the greatest cartoons of the past 20 years

I friggin' love SWAT Kats. I'd love to see the show being revived like Double Dragon (with Double Dragon Neon) was.

I also loved Spiral Zone (despite not remembering it much), Darkwing Duck and other Disney series (Rescue Rangers for example).

I watched and liked many cartoons, but SK and DWD are among my all time favs.

As for anime series I love Slayers.

Cosmic--Chaos In reply to Pedigri [2012-11-08 02:03:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it was an awesome show with so much potential. Thundercats was revived with a "retold" series (I never saw it) but I wish I could say the same for SWAT Kats. There is an official DVD (that I proudly own) but it only ships to the USA. Maybe you could find one on ebay.

I never saw Slayers, Double Dragon or Spiral Zone- but I loved Darkwing Duck.

I believe I've finished editing part Shattered part four, there was so much wrong with it (so many typo's!) it made me go aaaargh several times. I may have missed a few things but I believe I addressed most of the things you said, even though some edits were very subtle.

Oh, I see. I hope you feel better now.
I have no problem with that It's not that I'll be reading a chapter once We both know it's not the end result and the end result is what counts

I'm going to read it now. Talk to you soon.

Best wishes.

Seeing the amount of work an uploaded chapter gives me (not that I mind, but I also have to make sure I keep writing enough new material), I will most likely attempt a weekly upload: so expect new chapters each Friday. I was told it was a good idea to have a 'set upload date'.

So, how's the work on the new chapter coming along?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TEANO In reply to Pedigri [2012-10-10 19:35:54 +0000 UTC]

It's done, and it has been for quite awhile. I've finished 7 chapters up until now (8 if you count the prologue). None of them are quite as long as the first, though.

Oh, I see. I was hoping you'd have something I could review, but I wouldn't want to mess with your schedule. I can hardly wait

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-26 19:36:02 +0000 UTC]

I see. Yes, a schedule can give you motivation and a reason not to slack. Readers also like a set time when they can check back and read a part of what they like.

I'm thinking of submitting idea explorations/short stories and parts of my novel to dA, although I'm not done with the first draft yet. I have 24 A4 format pages.

TEANO In reply to Pedigri [2012-09-26 20:38:04 +0000 UTC]

That's cool. Just upload it when you feel you should, no point in rushing. I think the concept for Fallen Children spent at least 1 year (possibly longer) in the drawer before I truly started writing on it.

I started writing my novel, Inquilibrium: Behind the Curtain of Life, when I was in the second grade of college. 5 years ago. And it has already been in a failed experimental phase This draft is a complete re-write.

I probably have stuff that's been lying around for a similar amount of time. Most of it came to life on the RPG boards I (used to) write on. Cutting their storylines from what was already provided by the boards or got provided by other members is very difficult, but I'm giving it time until I come up with a good solution.

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-28 12:42:10 +0000 UTC]

You know... Yesterday, just before midnight, I gave in to the urge to write a story idea exploration piece and found that it's easier for me to write in English, than in Polish, which I found strange.

I always found the English language more epic, more poetic, lofty, and especially old English. I love old English, I love the English Draconian and Bal-Sagoth use in their lyrics.

I might submitt it soon, provided I get over my resistance to submitting unfinished work.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TEANO In reply to Pedigri [2012-09-28 13:41:11 +0000 UTC]

It's exactly the same with me. Writing in Dutch just doesn't cut it. I'm used to writing in English so it's what I do. I can always translate it later.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-28 14:27:11 +0000 UTC]

I keep forgetting that Dutch is spoken in Belgium.

I'm a bit afraid of writing a big piece in a language I'm not going to publish, because as a translator I know that simply changing the words and phrases into your native language won't cut it. I won't ensure that the rhytm will be kept. That the sentences will be bridged properly. That they'll flow logically. It's like you had to write it again from scratch.

Of course, it's less of a problem if your style is simple. My usual style isn't and what sounds cool in English doesn't have to sound as epic in Polish.

It's a tough choice, but if simply writing in a different language is a motivating factor then I'm all for it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TEANO In reply to Pedigri [2012-09-28 14:45:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, we also speak German and French, at least some of us do.

The most important thing is that you can get to write the story. I've never written *that* many pages in Dutch because I can't get it to sound right... This is partially a complex put to my by a teacher who used to destroy all my sentences just for the heck of it though, lol.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-28 16:06:39 +0000 UTC]

Do many people speak the Flemish dialect?

My problem exactly. I and my countrymen when reading a translation of an epic, lofty sentence would think: "This sounds so pompous and unnatural! No one speaks like that!"

I guess you have your favourite, epic sounding words in foreign languages. The ones in your own language don't sound so "magical" since you use and hear them used so often. Or they sound strange because they are used in your language very rarely.

It's often a problem that when you give something to critique who doesn't know much about creative writing (and seems to have a hidden unfulfilled writer complex), he tells you how HE would have written this story, re-writing perfect sentences so they'd sound like his own style

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TEANO In reply to Pedigri [2012-09-28 16:42:01 +0000 UTC]

Most of us, somewhat over half of the population I think.

Many of our talented people never make it outside of Belgium because 1) we underestimate ourselves constantly 2) the language (we can speak English but people rarely make the step) 3) any fanbase built for anything in Belgium is always going to be too small to have much effect on the rest of the world.

That's another reason I choose English - currently it's thΓ© language that makes the world go around. If I wrote in Dutch, I couldn't even post here.

That said I have read and written stuff that sounds good in Dutch as well, it's not like I'm completely giving up on it either.

It also seems to me English has at least 10 words with different nuances for every word, while we have... 1.

That's exactly what my teacher was like. She changed your sentences even though they were correct, turning your entire paper red. Don't get me wrong she was a good teacher but that was one of her less positive sides

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-28 17:12:59 +0000 UTC]

I see. I tried to think of any Belgian bands that I know of and/or like, but only Suicide Commando comes to my mind. But I know (and like) a few Dutch bands (Delain, Epica, After Forever, Caro Emerald, Carach Angren).

I took a look at a list of Belgian metal bands and saw that I only heard something of Aborted ([link] ).

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact your people underestimate yourself constantly.

I had this problem constantly - I didn't know if to start building an audience for a blog by writing in Polish, or to aim for a bigger, English-speaking audience, but I figured out I don't know what popular sites would allow to promote myself effectively, I also didn't know the tastes of foreign people, so I figured I'll stick to my people and eventually expand my activity abroad.

I understand. It also depends on the genre. I'm fine with writing - say - horror in a more "normal" style, but I'd miss the poetic, epic language if I wrote fantasy the way I write in other genres.

I see. Well, people criticize French for the same reason.

I don't think Polish has this problem, but I may be wrong. I like the fact that we have more than "and" and "or" in the connecting words department and each has an alternative - i/oraz or lub/albo or ale/lecz (but). This is one thing that annoys the hell out of me in English - the fact you're basically stuck with "and" and "or" (unless you resort to phrases like "as well as").

It's sad how some people think they're always right, think that everything they create is beautiful and perfect and think that people think the same way as they do.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TEANO In reply to Pedigri [2012-09-28 17:51:33 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't say it's the artist's (any artist's) fault, but the (larger) audience quite commonly has an 'ohh it's only from our small country' attitude. Though we definitely have people who try as well.

It's funny how we also ignore the Belgian people who do make it big within our own borders - Jean Claude Van Damme is perhaps the only Belgian actor to reach world fame but we'd rather give all attention to our very local productions. In Belgium, he barely gets any attention at all. It's not that I'm his biggest fan, but still.

I love having lots of different words to choose from!

We have lots of good bands, if you're into Metal I can recommend Dyscordia, FireForce, Diablo Boulevard, Channel Zero, Iron Mask, Warbeast and Manic Movement.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-28 18:32:25 +0000 UTC]

I see. That's actually common amongst other nations. We tend to think that if it was imported it must have been successful abroad, so successful that people found it worth importing But often artist's are not that famous and rich, but they play along to the marketing department's game, because the illusion of success generates more sales. In fact, there are Polish bands who were said to "achieve a big success" in a popular European country, despite achieving no such thing, but the public won't notice and won't check the facts.

We even have sayings criticizing that: "Cudze chwalicie, swego nie znacie", which means roughly "You praise what others did, but you don't know what your own people did" (or have). And "Polacy nie gΔ™si, swΓ³j jΔ™zyk majΔ…" (Poles are not goose, they have their own language", which was a reaction to writing only in Latin and adopting foreign words, mostly French.

In Poland you often have to achieve success abroad to become famous and praised. Until you do you may be underappreciated despite your big talent.

Hmm, I haven't heard of them, but I'll check them out. I listen to many genres of metal and their subgenres (esp. death metal), and their combinations. But I can appreciate original sounding music. For this reason I like avantgarde music like Diablo Swing Orchestra or Adversus. I'm open minded about music and like some pop, many industrial, synthpop, orchestral, video game/chiptune music, mathcore/djent etc., etc.

What do you listen to?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TEANO In reply to Pedigri [2012-09-28 19:00:14 +0000 UTC]

That pretty much confirms my belief that the Polish people haven't lost their backbone

I listen to almost everything, except most rap / related genres, most modern pop and modern electro / dance / dubstep (I like some electronic music but most of it is 90's stuff).

I mostly listen to Metal, and many of it's subgenres, of course, but most of my favourites are Thrash and Power.

I don't listen to much Death. Carcass, early Paradise Lost, Warbeast, new Sepultura and Dark Tranquility are probably the closest I get to it.

My favourite bands are Therapy?, the Fun Lovin' Criminals, Gamma Ray, At Vance, Alice Cooper, Soulfly, Iron Mask, Paradise Lost, U.D.O., Rammstein, the Cure, the Prodigy, U2, Iron Maiden, Rage, Annihilator, Deep Purple, Grave Digger Garbage, Lunascape and the Guano Apes (I'm probably forgetting some)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-28 19:57:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, we survived 123 years of not having our country on the world map and occupation It makes one appreciate ones tradition and cultural heritage

I don't listen to rap/hip-hop either, with the exception of musicians who combine it with the genres I listen too (Stromkern combines rap with industrial. Highland combines eurorap with classical music. Same goes for black metal - I don't listen to pure black metal, especially not the extreme/the ones who base their music on shock and extreme blasphemy, but I enjoy the ones that combine it with industrial (The Wicked, The Kovenant, Thyrane), play symphonic black metal (Carach Angren), or aren't too extreme musically or lyrically (I am probably wrong, but Dimmu Borgir striked me as one).

I see. Modern pop is often garbage. I'm also not very fond of dubstep. Sure, some tracks are listenable, but... I'd rather listen to djent, which can sound somewhat similar.

I listen to some Thrash and Power as well. If you don't know them already, you might enjoy Sylosis. Some say they play just thrash, some say they mix in some melodeath as well. I liked their "Conclusion of an Age" album more. Fear Factory combines thrash metal with industrial metal. Again I liked their previous album better.
I search for original melodies/riffs in music, but haven't come accross many thrash bands I liked yet. Granted I didn't test too many, but...

If you're interested in hearing a power metal band with a rather strong female voice, check out Ancient Bards: I liked the songs All that is true, Eyes on Me, In my veins, and the one with "For as long as we know how to use our weapons" (I forget the title).

I love most of Rammstein's songs, except the newer ones.

If you like Rammstein, you might like older songs of Megaherz - same genre. Try "Du oder Ich" "Beiss mich", "Showdown", "Ja genau", "Herz aus Stein", "Menschmachine", "Negativ" and many more.

Fear Factory is awesome

The best Thrash album ever imo is Annihilator - Never, Neverland, closely followed by their Refresh the Demon album. Forbidden - Twisted Into Form is another. Testament's last album is also really good.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-28 22:25:39 +0000 UTC]

I remember liking some Testament song(s). It may not be your cup of tea, but my intuition tells me to suggest Sybreed to you. It has some elemetnts of groove/thrash metal. But it's mainly very creative industrial metal.

Try songs from "Slave Design". Machine Gun Messiah is very brutal, easiest to get into for someone who likes Thrash.

I also love Septic Flesh. It's a unique blend of orchestral music and gothic/death metal. "Comunnion" or "The Architect" are good for starters.

If the blend of progressive metal + technical death metal appeals to you, try First Fragment's "Afterthought Extasy" is has cool machine gun like growls. I like to listen to it repeatedly

I also really recommend you checking out "Messenger of God" and "Armored Bards" by Heathen Foray.

I'll check the ones you suggested out. Getting into a new genre means more music to enjoy

You are right, again, and I do respect that Blizzard has the final choice, after all it *is* their franchise. At first I was hesitant to share it before it was done, but I don't think the prologue reveals too much of the plot yet, so I'll spend some time posting the chapter here and there over the course of the next few days. Before I do that I'll probably make the edits you (and other people) proposed though. I also gotta remind myself to keep writing! It hasn't been a problem but I need to make sure I don't go barging in head over heels

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-16 12:26:23 +0000 UTC]

The book "The Long Tail" was first wholly published on a blog and then published edited in accordance to the reader's opinions.

People generally don't like reading on-line/pdfs and many can afford it to support a writer they like (many buy CDs after listening to an album on Youtube) especially if he explicitly says how much he needs this support, because generally people think writers are rich and don't mind. But even if a book lives its own life on-line it's free publicity. Paulo Coelho encurages and even helps people pirate his own books by providing links to sites with the book to download.
Of course, it's your choice, it's your book and you have every right to be rewarded for your work. It's just that sometimes the best advertisment is the product itself

DOTA started as a hermetic map for Starcraft and entirely through word of mouth became a HUGE multibillion market. And it's based on a business plan based on being free.

Asking people who can't afford a product and have downloaded it and liked it - asking them to promote it is often the best thing you can do. I don't like downloading, but I'm poor as hell. But I promote my fav bands songs wherever and whenever I can, on my blog, on Facebook, in recommendations etc.

Never underestimate free advertising.

But getting valid feedback as you go can help you save a lot of work with re-writing.

Freshman writers often fear giving their work away to read because they think someone might steal their ideas. While there is a small percent of people who would do that, the ideas won't work unless they create a similar setting and a smiliar character, but this setting and character will most probably not appeal to them personally. Just because I like a story about a ninja doesn't mean I like writing about them.
But I understand. I had this fear too. But I've developed over 1000 .doc pages of notes and many of the ideas could spin-off its own book so I'm not afraid someone might steal the original ideas.
It's the effort needed to write them into a story and the need to write a story first that keeps people from using them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TEANO In reply to Pedigri [2012-09-16 20:01:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the feedback is definitely worth it, right now I want to write all the chapters first though because I'm told if you focus on re-writing too soon you'll never finish what you started and I have made this mistake in the past. Don't worry, you will get to read the rest of it eventually.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pedigri In reply to TEANO [2012-09-16 20:11:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I understand. That's the reason why after a ton of re-writes and taking notes I started to write the story from the beginning in a more "freewriting" way to fill in the gaps I couldn't fix before (sequence of events, what event leads to which).
The left hemisphere is eager to criticize even what you haven't put on the page yet
