If I get it right, this is like putting together a very complicated puzzle that you make yourself, right? And is each pice first stained and than placed, or do you first put the pieces in place and than color them? Like the girls hair, is each different shade a different piece? Really interesting style of art.

You are almost right and yes it is like putting together a puzzle.
You cut small pieces from different kind of woods, put them all together, glue the assembled picture onto an 1/2 inch baseboard, sand the surface then apply several coats of clear finish. No, I don't use stain or dye to color the woods. My method rely on the wood's natural color, shading and texture, but occasionally I do use different pieces of similar woods to achieve shading, when it is unavoidable.
