sorry i took so long to get back to you. Most likely south or central america. I am somewhere around 50% fluent in spanish, (and I say that in the present, simply bc I am completely out of practice.)
In fact, when I am around spanish for a good 3-4 or 5 hours, my spanish skills jump up much higher. Most of my problem is the lack of hearing it, which effects my ability to speak correctly.
Either way, the director of the language school in Mexico offered to write me a letter of recommendation for the peace corps, or there's another program type thing that works in orphanages and organic farms. Either way, p.c. is probably my way to go because I can defer my loans and think about which direction I plan to go for grad school within anthropology [which is kind of unlimited].....I'm hoping to work on environmental education - or education in general. I really want to get into an environmental program though bc the environm. is everything. I hope to use environmental studies in my cultural anthropology career. holistic.
so p.c....latin america---where, no idea...hopefully i'll be in contact with a recruiter in the next week or two.

environment ~~~
wow some organic farm working would be pretty cool, too, and working in the orphanages would be tough, but unimaginably rewarding~~!~~
sounds like your heart is in the right places~~
njoy~~~

yeah i'm really wanting to do environmental stuff...environmental education, etc. I mean, I've always loved ecology since I was in the 4th and 5th grade. And I had always been a camper, living in the woods for days with my dad multiple times every year. Basically, I've been wanting to get more into ecology and environmental studies lately for a lot of reasons.
Of course first off nature kicks ass. Secondly, the environment determines quite a bit in socio-cultural anthropology, as well as archeology. Your environment determines the options for different cultural developments and Human Evolutionary Ecology (a very young branch of evolutionary bio-cultural anthropology that is probably the forefront of evolutionary studies on human behavior, usually in hunter-gatherer societies) Third, the environment is being destroyed wherever someone isnt protecting it. Four, nature is the only source of true awe struck moments. Never am I struck by awe by anything as much as nature.
The list could go on and on and on and on....and those are more selfish reasons haha

i think educating one's self and others about the environment, enjoying the environment and protecting the environment are probably some of the most selfless areas that any conscious person could partake in~!~
the study of environment can be seen by traveling anywhere and gaining an understanding of what the children do for fun because the children will someday take these hobbies into different areas of their lives and their children's lives.
environment is existence~~~~
mmmm imagine taking a final walk into the woods, settling down under a cozy tree, and watching the world pass by eternally....once again becoming one with nature without all this hub-bub about caskets or cremation~~~
studying people in and adapting to nature is fascinating~~~

oh well i meant selfish to apply more to me wanting to do those things bc its what i enjoy and for my future career. I wouldnt mind education of english, but if I could work with the environment, every day and night is a continual field of data, whether it's like forestry and ecotourism stuff I would be doing, through the glasses of an anthropologist, I see potential to improve the lives of those less fortunate in a more holistic way.
I was reading this ethnography on malnutrition in Mali, Africa. (the author actually went to texas a&m for her BA). The writer was working on studying the extent of malnutrition in Mali and whatnot when some health group asks for her help in getting some data and statistics bc she's an anthropologist and we get down and dirty. Anyhow, the end of that program comes a long time down the road and the writer is at a dance ceremony being held around a large fire. She described the kids as looking like "Dancing Skeletons," thus, the name of the book. (great, highly suggested, anyone could read it. Even if they didnt know what anthropology is) Basically, the health squad went crazy on sanitation and vitamin A deficiencies and immunizations. The 'dancing skeletons' scene had her pissed. She tells the director of the health program that they've helped kids survive the tough parts of childhood around 2-6 yrs old. Yes they would have died without all the health organization's help. But they still need nutrition...basically they've just delayed death bc they will probably end up starving later on-when they probably would have just died at 2 or 3 from malaria or the measles.
so things arent always as they seem. anthropology. gotta be holistic. Hopefully I can sway the peace corps recruiter in my interview at the next unknown date.
