Description
NPR droned over the radio for a few moments, something to break the silence. I couldn’t believe him. He was being such an ass. I didn’t look over at him on my way to work, but I knew he was there. The cars around my little blue mini-cooper took turns moving into my blind spot, or riding up to my bumper, pissing me off even more. I can’t believe he had nothing to say, he totally ruined my date last night.I turned over to him, giving a deadly glare as I turned off the radio.
“I was listening to that.” He said, his voice thick with irritation.
“Too bad, it’s my car.” I spat back, turning back to the road to keep from groaning with rage.
“You have always been like this,” He said, “ever since we were kids.”
I rolled my eyes and turned on my turning signal. I needed to move away from this asshole in the Honda.
“I try to forget that we grew up together.”
He reached over and turned on the radio again, switching it to a station playing rap music and when I groaned with impatience he turned the volume up to drown out my temper.
“Damn it, Lamar! Turn it OFF!”
He laughed at my irritation and danced in the passenger seat. I turned away from the road and glared at him, but he paid no attention. I reached over to hit him, but not making contact. He moved away from me, towards the window. My fists flailed in vain as he laughed mockingly. I could feel the car start to drift towards a sporty Corvette and jumped my hands back to the wheel, correcting the problem. That, too, was Lamar’s fault. He had scared Joey away and made me look dumb, and now he was trying to make me wreck my car. Ass.
“If you ever bring a girl home, I’m going to ruin that date for you, just like you did for me.” I quipped, already planning my vengeance.
“I don’t date, you know that.” Lamar said, very matter-of-factly.
He was right, but I wouldn’t be shot down.
“Don’t…or can’t? I have a feeling it’s the latter of the two…” I said coldly, taking this chance to turn off the radio.
Lamar was quiet, not saying anything about his beloved Ying Yang Twinz being shut off from him. Maybe I had cut in a bit too deep…
“Forget it.” I said, trying to drop the subject without seeming to lose. I guess that was good enough, because he reached over and turned the radio back on. I guess it was good enough for me too, because I didn’t complain. I slowed down and put on my turning signal, then turned into the massive parking lot of my boring corporate job. Four years in college and this is all I got. I parked in my usual spot and turned off the car. I sat there a bit, and then finally turned to Lamar.
“Sorry.” I said, then got out of the car, locking it.
He had always been this difficult, ever since I imagined him.

Oooo awesome. Genius idea! I like how you kept it going until the very end, with that one line that changes everything about the story. Oh so twisty, you are.
