Description
“Afterflood” Pencil on acid free Illustration Board 40” x 30”This almost kicked my ass, I started it in early April completed it the last day of August.
In the area where I live there is a flood plain, every spring these trees are by and large underwater. I came upon this place when the waters receded- I was blown away by the complex movements of line; limbs, branches, twigs and brambles that seemed to be hanging on for dear life. Because it was this complex I had to draw it, the composition was inspired by one of my heroes Franz Kline, often abstraction is the catalyst to my compositions, my previous drawing being inspired by Pollock. The unexpected difficulty in drawing thousands of branches weaving over and under, lost lines, found lines and keeping track of all of it was a bit crazy, but rather Zen at the same time. I worked form life, photos and pieces of twigs that I collected it was quite the journey. After almost eight months on trees I’m off to do a portrait, can't wait.

I have been driving around taking pictures as the leaves fall off the trees where I live with a idea to draw them and you have inspired me that this can be done. The details work is amazing and I was afraid it couldnt be done but you have shown me its possible.

Is illustration board the same as Bristol Board?
I have been trying some Canson (extra smooth) Bristol Board for my drawings, but there's something about it that just makes my drawings look rather unremarkable... like I can't manipulate or layer the pencil.

no the kind of Illustration board this is on is Crescent 500 its smooth but not like Bristol, its hard to get dark on i you really have to draw in layers

yeah i stared at it for 500 hours it almost was the end of me, yet the one im working on now i have 700 hours into and im not half done. that does not mean that it takes many hours to make good art, i could create a 1400 hour pile of poo.

I've done some intricate work and it sucks losing lines. No one else sees it, but it's all that you see when you look at it.
