bawww sorry if there's anything you don't understand, I was pretty brain-dead by the time I got to compiling this ahhhhh, so just ask me if something's not clear.
Anyway, the pic used is ~Senichi-Kanako 's gaia auction art, I upgraded it to RL commission quality in exchange for the right to make a tutorial out of it :>
I swear when it's less hot and I'm less brain-dead, I'll make tutorials with actual readable writings in them sob.

do you use a tablet? cuz i don't use one so it's hard for me to make clean lines like that with a mouse, especially when i do sketches using a pen...i have to use the vector lines layer(is that right?)

I have an Intous4, and it is weird with SAI (if I click paint it starts painting as soon as my mouse goes on the picture, same with eraser > >)

You say you don't use a lot of layers. Do you mostly color in one layer? If yes, this leads me to another question.
If you don't like.. for example, the hair color, how do you adjust it when you're only using one layer for coloring?

the layers are shown at the left, and uhhh let's see, I think I used two for colors in here. It's really not about how many layers, it's more about what you're comfortable with. I'm comfortable with few layers because I get confused when there's too many, but you can have as many as you want. : )
and I don't adjust the color usually, so that's another reason why I paint with so few layers.

Try looking at my screenshot and see if you can get the palette out by clicking some button or another. If you do get it out, have the color you want on your brush and just right click a square and press save : )
