WOW! ItΒ΄s like IΒ΄m flying on the back of the dragon, too. Stunning work!

I love the overall dynamism of this piece, and all the detail, but...like others have said...the butt shot really detracts from its potential - in my opinion, at least. If she was wearing legit armor, it might work.

That's a matter of taste. For my part, without the sensuality, I wouldn't have even bothered with this work. It'd just be another bit of dragons and fantasy which I'm deathly bored of.

The bum rather distracts from the volcanic-eruption-of-an-epic-dragon.
Cheesecake has its place, this isn't it.

I have to ask, why isn't this the place for it?
Enlighten me.

It clashes with the mood being created by the rest of the piece.

Well, I would obviously disagree, so you'll have to go more in depth. I consider the rider much more of the mood setter. I was more taken aback by the sheer bluntness of your original statement that this isn't the place for 'cheesecake', a term I wouldn't think applies, especially given the spirit of this painting being molded in the fashion of many classic artists who were masters of the craft, and the skill and care the artist obviously took.

pskullv In reply to MatthewTreadstone [2015-02-02 09:42:41 +0000 UTC]
If it's the rider setting the mood, then the dragon is what clashes. Does the in-your-face bubble but of bikini-clad Amazon who is dressed for sex appeal to the point of impracticality really meld with a Godzilla-sized dragon breathing out a veritable mushroom cloud?
Also, drawing inspiration from acclaimed artists and styles does not in-and-of-itself give a picture quality, it's how it's used.

Skill is what gives a picture quality, and this artist has a lot of it. To me, nothing clashes in the picture. It all fits just fine, as it has in thousands of other pictures I've seen even by masters long dead for centuries, and modern ones like Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Luis Royo, and Dave Stevens. Perhaps you are simply in the wrong place, since you are clearly not a fan of this type of work.

"In the wrong place?"
"...clearly not a fan...?"
Mate, you're being rather presumptuous and, frankly, snobbish.
I'm simply looking at something and criticising it based on my own knowledge, opinions and observations, as one can do with anything.
I'm stating my opinion and then arguing my point. Your entitled to your own, certainly, but don't go making such pretentious assumptions about the people that disagree with you.
P.S. Skill still has to be used, properly.

MatthewTreadstone In reply to pskullv [2015-02-03 08:53:34 +0000 UTC]
And while on the subject of snobbery, refer back to your original comment, since you apparently know how artists are supposed to use their skills and time

MatthewTreadstone In reply to pskullv [2015-02-03 08:47:38 +0000 UTC]
If skill has to be used properly who decides what is proper? You think this is not proper use of the artist's skills? Based on what, your personal preference? We spend years practicing, studying, learning, drawing, for thousands of hours and many sleepless nights, to create the visions that inspire us. The word proper has no use in how I or other artists use the skills we have acquired through all that time or effort. The only two factors that determine what we do with our skills is desire and customer requirements should we be commissioned, not a vague sense of what someone would consider proper, which is probably the most snobbish thing written here.

Yes, because I'm certain that there has never been an artists that has taken the advice of their critics...
P.S. My criticism is based on a little bit more than my preferences, it also based on a little something called common sense.

Search for Conan, He-man, King Leonidas, Tarzan, Hercules, Achilles, or any of the various male centered paintings of Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, or myriad other artists and characters throughout time and you'll probably find the beef you're looking for.

well judging by its size I 'd say her spear's blade is not long enough to pierce even just half of its wing's membrane or the external layer of its eyes.
Β
So I'd say there is absolutely no possibility of her winning this match up.
