Description (For a basic view of the Birrin Bodyplan, which has 6 legs, see this link [slightly out of date] [link] )

Refugees, faced with starvation and loss of livelihood by the diversion of the river that feeds the vast lakes they live upon, were shipped to uninhabited badlands in neighboring nations. The state responsible for the disruptive developments paid local poor governments, in arms and financial relief, to accept millions of displaced people inside their borders.

Ill feelings due to the destruction of their towns and habitat, anger soon erupted into large scale protests which the financially insecure and corrupt nations had trouble containing.

Seen here is a vast march from a nearby tent city; angry refugees storm an area of newly (but cheaply) build admin towers created to manage the huge displaced population.

Younger and angrier refugees quickly turned to violence, attacking understaffed riot police staff with knives and other improvised weapons.

This might sound somewhat anthropomorphic, but I can totally imagine the refugee shouting obscenities at the riot control officer as he shanks him.

I couldn't know just how another sentient being thinks, but I think I would (and have been) try a little harder to make them different than us in mental and social terms. To me, it's about presenting something different rather than something you can relate to. So I gotta agree with Harris.

I think it is plausible that an alien could have a police force of some kind, as well as political dissent as violence.

Our minds are only biased toward thinking that though.

In terms of possible social parallels between us humans and other sentient life in the universe, I think this might be pushing it a little. Unless the Birrin have a similar psychological setup as humans in that they too get pissed when stuck with crappy governments and poor leadership, then the possibilities of similar social upheavals are a given.

Abiogenisis In reply to Harris2300 [2010-10-03 02:12:02 +0000 UTC]

They are like humans psychologically for two reasons. The first is that the story they take part in would be difficult for human readers to relate too if they were truly alien.

The second and more important is, I am simply unable to imagine a truly alien mind.

Completely mind-blowing- love the Birrin, and this might be the best piece yet. Oozes atmosphere, and the details like the riot armor are amazing. Wish I could get models of these guys...!

When I look at this, it animates in my head;
Waving flags and shouts of the crowd in the background, the alien yet recognisable scream of hatred as the refugee makes the assault. Then there's a helmet-muffled grunt as the attacked riot police officer takes the wound. While this is happening, the officer behind hurriedly runs to the other officer's aid. All the while, helicopter blades drum quietly in the background.
I can see this being 'filmed' with a shaky, improvised 'camera', a bit like D-9.
...The poses are just really dynamic.
Everything looks well thought out and detailed, and I like the contrast between the rioters' simple get-up and the refined, protective gear.

I'm really inspired by this piece.

And it's good to see you're doing art again.

This piece is epic as hell! All I wanna ask is do the Birrin now have 4 eyes, because I see a glimmer of green below the attacking fellows mouth, also are the eyes retracted or did you decide to shorten them? Finally, the eye color is a bit too vivid for my liking, maybe it would look better with a gray/green or pale yellow? Overall, friggin amazing man!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Abiogenisis In reply to Rayn-Hammer [2010-09-23 23:04:19 +0000 UTC]

Cheers

The birrin do have four eyes now, yes the eyestalks are retracted due to the risk of them being damaged in the fight.

And the green isn't actually the eyes themselves; this birrin is wearing sunglasses with a green tint to them.

I love seeing how your designs for the Birrin slowly change over time, those strips of something or other coming off the back of the refugee, are those pieces of clothing or are they the ears?
