Yeah, openCanvas has lots of layer modes after version 3, I think.

Very helpful stuff. I find that adding textures--even if they are so subtle that the only way you can tell they are there is by turning them off, it really adds to the piece. 3d artists rely heavily on textures and it's an easy way to vary colors in a static piece. That's the reason why most good effects in photoshop start with cloud renders.
