Posting something a little different, today... Here's an unfinished page from the upcoming third (yes, THIRD*) volume of EMPOWERED, the "sexy superhero comedy" I write and draw for Dark Horse Comics. (Might I add that volume 1 is on sale NOW?)

I have only thirty pages or so still "open" in EMPOWERED vol. 2 (due out in September '07), so the rather long story this page is excerpted from, "Girls and Boys", is being bumped back into EMP vol. 3... I stopped the story in mid-page, once I figured that out.

Anyhoo, I've left this EMP page's base scan untweaked (I normally do Photoshop "levels" adjustment on all my scans), so you can see the "underdrawing" at right a bit more clearly... Yep, I do a very light set of perspective "construction grids" and a basic sketch of all the characters (in H lead, usually) before I go back in with the thick, heavy 3B lead used for the final artwork. As I'm right-handed, I work from left to right across the page, with a sheet (or two) of copy paper taped across the open parts of the page, lest my drawing hand smudge and dirty the blank areas.

Anyhoo, this is actually page 2 from "Girls and Boys"; I'll next post the story's finished page 1.
