Description
Italy’s has it very own Stonehenge at it is called Poggio Rota. I have visited it in November 2022, during my journey in Toscana.
In 2004, following the cutting of the forest, on top of a hill in front of the river Fiora, at 6 kilometres to Pitigliano, it came to light a megalithic stone circle. It was discovered by an Italian researcher Giovanni Feo, an Etruscan civilization expert. The studies conducted at the site, which also involved researchers from Italian universities assumed that the megaliths of Poggio Rota were built towards the middle of the third millennium BC by the Rinaldone civilization (4000–2000 BC).
The 10 megaliths are cut from volcanic rock, separated by narrow passageways that mapped the solar rays from the summer solstice to the winter one, allowing the local Rinaldone civilization to engage in some very primitive but remarkable astronomy!
Poggio Rota Stone Circle is the only existing monument of this kind in Italy in good condition.
