The Mayan calendar didn't predict the "end of the world", just the "end of the age". They believed the world was going to change very much at that point, not come to an end. And it wasn't going to be so much of a physical change marked by destruction, but more of a change in the minds of the human race and the systems that we function in.
Hollywood and popular media interpreted it badly and spread lies to get money, like they always do.

Actually, the Mayans believed that every new age began with some sort of natural disaster, like the biblical world flood.So it would be the end as we know it.
