Description

Seattle's real flag is some strange SOB (seal on bed-sheet) designed for the 1990 Goodwill Games. This new proposed flag of Seattle features the following elements:

The white stripe of the upper two thirds of the flag symbolizes Seattle’s famous and frequent overcast skies, and the navy-blue stripe on the bottom third represents the Puget Sound, which dominates and is dominated by Seattle.

The six smaller stars arranged in a semi-circle represent the six economic booms which have characterized the city's history. The first (starting from the left) represents the Timber Boom, when Henry Yesler and a handful of settlers founded a logging mill for selling timber to San Francisco, because it kept burning down. The second represents the Yukon Boom, when Seattle became a major supplier of picks and shovels to prospectors in the Yukon Gold Rush. The third represents the WWI Shipping Boom, when Seattle was a major artery of trade with the embattled Russian Empire. The fourth represents the WWII Maritime Boom, when Seattle hosted a major shipyard and supplied the American troops fighting Japan. The fifth represents the Boeing Boom, when Seattle became a major center for the design and construction of military and commercial aircraft. The sixth star represents the Tech Boom, when Seattle became the host of Amazon and a Mecca for programmers and digital start-ups.

The large central star represents Seattle's resilience through the bust years. Seattle has survived repeated economic downturns and has always managed to bounce back, rather than become depopulated and dilapidated like other cities suffering bust years. It also honors events when Seattlites have fought back in times of hardship, such as the 1919 General Strike and the 1934 Battle of Smith Cove.

The nine points of each star represent the nine incorporated towns which banded together to form Seattle: Ballard, Columbia, Georgetown, Ravenna, South Park, South Seattle, Southeast Seattle, West Seattle, and Seattle proper.

The teal of the stars comes from Seattle's current flag, and the navy-blue is the color of Seattle's primary sports teams: the Seahawks, the Mariners, and the Sounders.
