Description I learned to paint simply by looking. If your wondering what happens in my head on each of the panels. Nothing ! I'm listening to my music. I hear this a lot from one of my favorite artists who say "When you paint, let go everything you know about painting". It took me a while to fully understand what they meant.

"Blind energy" is a good thing. When one begins to paint, everything you know should disappear and the emotional side should take over." Jeanean Songco Martin

I really didn't feel like covering my process with useless information to make this a proper tutorial. It's not what goes on inside my head. I simply paint what I see, not what I know.

Guidelines, ideal proportions and premade compositions that they teach us in our art school they become more a distraction for an artist. If you can let that go maybe this tutorial might not be so useless after all

Oil on canvas, 30" by 24"
Took me 3 days.

If you have any questions let me know I'll be happy to explain.

Heh, well I don't think I can paint anywhere as good as you, but I love the advice you give. I'm always freaking out and constantly trying to fix errors on my artwork rather than relaxing and letting it all flow out. I'll try to follow your advice from now on.

I love the way you agree that what you are taught can become a distraction. The best musicians play by ear, and the best artists play by eye....

This is just...UNNNGH! EXACTLY the advise I've been looking for! I felt overwhelmed with information and how-to-dos simply because I didn't feel I could do well but THIS is perfect. I'd completely forgotten about the fun and joy of painting and the whole playfulness of forgetting the 'rules'. Thanks so much for puting this up and reminding us all of what we should already know! Definetely a favourite! <3

Sorry to jump into like this , but if you like her advice (which is awesome indeed), maybe you should also look into a book called "The new drawing on the right side of the brain" from "Betty Edwards"...it goes really deep into this subject and even suggests some exercises in order to help you get into that "blind energy" state...

I don't know if this helps at all, but I find it an interesting reading anyway ^^"

Ivan, "When you paint, let go everything you know about painting"...who said this quote? this is so deep.
I wish i could learn this concept of blind energy. CG Arts are cool but i think i should go back to traditional Art first to understand life xD Thanks for the inspiration Ivan, You are really inspiring. Keep up the great work dude

"I simply paint what I see, not what I know."

This is very interesting... And validating, as your work is so brilliant. I've studied drawing for two years, and throughout all that time my study works were nothing but plain, self-conscious and boring (needless to say, I was immensely bored with the process of their very creation, measuring proportions and all). Just when I forget about everything in the process, the mathematics of proportions, any artistic considerations etc. and let something from deep within guide my hand, something of a (relatively, for now) more hopeful quality emerges.

Which sometimes leads me to wondering, is the academic way of learning to draw/paint of any use at all? I'm quite sure there is really something valuable about it that I fail to put my finger on, but I can't figure out how it relates to this right brain based approach.

i can't afford to study art academically and your words give me hope. i draw in my own bedroom, with limited supplies and little knowledge. i look through DA occasionally for ideas and inspiration. thx for your enlightening and thought-provoking words!

If you don't mind my asking, where and for how long did you learn drawing and painting.

blind energy is bullshit ! there are techniques and science in it that you had to break your head on it to reach this level when you can just listen to music and think of nothing while painting , and you have let the beginners down with your " it comes naturally to me " stupid egos and posted a misleading "tutorial " title .. no hate or hard feelings , just a word of truth

Hmm, this is really nice... However, I don't think you were truly "free" when painting this as you say in the description, otherwise it wouldn't have turn out so realistic. Clearly you have a very well established notion of proportions and lighting.

im so amazed by your skill in oil! the details! the grass! Soo pretty... Please can you consider making a tutorial on oil painting materials and such for a complete beginner? I can see from this tut that you started off with very light and feathery oil wash, to get the colours and then you went thicker and thicker right while waiting in between the layers? How long would you say to wait between the layers? I have tried doing a painting with oils before but put it all down there, the colours look dull, its patchy etc. not what I wanted at all I would love to acheive this look of messy but really detailed and realistic like you have done! I have huge oil tubes but don't know how to control them like acrylic or watercolour :/ Any help would be really appriciated

I totaly agree with you... Art isn't about "how did you learn to do this? Teach me." stuff like that... The only thing they need to learn to know how to draw is... what art really is x) Thats what I think.
