Just a reminder, I saw this movie on it's release date but I didn't do a review before because life was once again being a pain in the ass for me and I wanted to wait for more people to watch this movie. So without a further a do, let's get started.OH MY GOD! After all the unfortunate delays and waiting, this movie did not disappoint. Godzilla VS Kong was unlike any other Kaiju movie I’ve seen and the best film in the whole Monsterverse.
The two main stars are both given the respect they deserve. Godzilla in this film was terrifying to the bone and became more badass than ever as the way he rampaged in Florida and Hong Kong reminded me of watching some old Toho Godzilla films. Kong is given so much character in this film and even though I'm Team Godzilla, I felt so bad for him as he was basically fighting for his life throughout the movie but was also just as badass as Big G.
This version of Mechagodzilla became one of my favorite Mecha's as he's basically a darker and evil version of Kiryu. Killing a large Skullcrawler by blasting it in half, giving Godzilla quite the smackdown in the third act and the worst part is that he became sentient once the power source loaded inside him awakened Kevin's consciousness. King Ghidorah was reborn as the titan equivalent of The Terminator.
The CGI looked absolutely fantastic and the day time shots really get to show off a lot more of the detail put within the models. The Hollow Earth itself was gorgeous and I would love to live there myself despite the dangerous creatures it inhabits such as Nozuki aka Gliding Cobra's (I'm not calling them Warbat's because that name is lame.), Hellhawks, Arachnoclaws and Doug the lizard.
A handful of music in the soundtrack provided by Tom Holkenborg is pretty good honestly. Aside from this Godzilla theme not being the best, there are still moments where it does sound better than the first version of the soundtrack. It also kind of has a bit of a techno/80s style to it. However, with that being said, I don't think this will be the most memorable soundtrack in the franchise when it comes to Godzilla soundtracks.
The movie's pacing was done very well in my opinion. No moments felt too long or too short than they need to be.
Most of the human characters are great to follow with only a few coming off as bland. Madison is still a great character since she knows it's unlikely for Godzilla to rampage around the world without a reason, her friend, Josh was also a pretty good character and Bernie is the funniest character in the whole film.
Mark isn't given much to do this time as he's given the role of a protective dad worried for his daughter.
Nathan Lind was an interesting character and I feel like he goes through the most character development out of everyone else.
Ilene Andrews was okay but wasn't bland enough for me to not care for her as she's concern for for both Jia (Whom she adopted) and Kong's safety.
Jia is just adorable and her relationship with Kong was incredibly heartwarming to watch, she is the soul reason Kong chose to team up with Godzilla against Mechagodzilla. She also made it on my list of favorite human characters in Godzilla movies.
The fights themselves were awesome as hell and very suspenseful and entertaining. The ocean fight was the one for Big G to win since he was basically fighting Kong in his turf and would've killed him a few times if the humans hadn't interfere. The Hong Kong battle is my favorite part in the whole movie with their second round now that Kong has his battle axe from his temple giving him an equal footing to Godzilla. Some of my favorite moments are when Kong shoves his axe through Godzilla's throat (Best callback to the 1962 film) and Godzilla laughing sarcastically after he manages to hit Kong in the back with his atomic breath. The last moments of the fight were insane as Godzilla went beast mode on Kong as he tried his best to fight back and despite Big G roaring right in his face to submit, Kong would rather die than bow as he's his own alpha but still loses. Final fight against Mecha G was also epic and Kong deserved the win as he took down Big G's mechanical doppelganger, predator style. (With some help of Bernie's alcoholic boos temporally malfunctioning Mecha G's systems.) Kong gains Godzilla's respect after helping him out and they both go their separate ways as two alphas. One King Above and One King Bellow.
Now the bad things I'll say about this film is that Ren, Walter and Maia are the most blandest villain's in the Monsterverse. I do kind of wish there was more to Ren Serizawa's character. Like, maybe his original motivation in making Mechagodzilla was to honor his father's work until he saw how big of a threat Godzilla could be and wanted to use the mech to give humanity a new defender. Mothra's deleted post credits with the Ling twins should've been added as it sets up more movies greatly and their were some things about Godzilla's and Kongs ancient war left unexplained.
This may very well be the greatest verses movie of all time and one of the greatest Kaiju films ever made in cinema. Adam Windgard and his film crew put a lot of hard work on making this movie and did such an epic job, So round of a applause to them. Considering that Kong defeated Godzilla back in 1962, it seems fitting that Big G defeats Kong in this film. One film where the American monster wins in a Japanese made film and the other where the Japanese Monster wins in an American made film. I'm also so glad both monsters didn't end up dying in the end, this movie series still has so much more tell and with the huge gross of money it's making around the world, there's no way Warner Bros and Legendary are pulling the plug. Continue The Monsterverse! 9.7/10.
