For my birthday this last November, my aunt got me the reissued model kits of King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Godzilla! I had a lot of fun putting them together and painting them! (Physically getting them was at the mercy of Big Bad Toy Store's stocking and USPS shipping, and they both made good time.)

Design-wise, Rodan is a fairly straight-forward stylization of the original 1956 design. Not much to say, but I love the energy in the pose.

As for painting, like all of the customs and kits I've done, I started off with a black primer (these paints blend and hold better on paint). I dry-brushed him purple, then with red; the insides of the wings were done with a lighter purple instead of red, but I did use some red to give them veins (unlike Ghidorah, they weren't sculpted). The reason for the purple is because I sort of use it as a color code, which I also do with my canvas paintings every now and then, with blue for heroes, and red for villains. Rodan is not a villain, per se, but he's been antagonistic; he's not a bad guy, but he's done bad things. So...purple. Plus, the way the paints don't apply at full opacity, the resulting red was a nice hue.

The claws were done with a gloss orange and a gloss white, while the ridges/spikes on the belly and his beak were only the gloss orange. The mouth is done with a gloss red (with a little of that gloss orange to make the details pop a bit), and the teeth are also done in the gloss orange and white combination. Like with Ghidorah, I used the color of the plastic (a light brown) for the eye color. However, I took some black for the pupil and a dot of white for a gleam.

The scenery was done with dark gray, tan, and light gray to give it a concrete-y look. When all the parts were attached, I went over it with the tan again to make it appear dusty. The clapper board nameplate was supposed to have a water-slide decal, but I hate those, so I took a small brush and wrote the name instead.
