Description
"Tulp Soldaat" (Tulip Soldier)A mini graphic novel/comic/what have you set in Holland during WWII. I'm more of an illustrator, not a comic artist so I wanted to make a comic without it looking too much like a ... comic? (and also prove illustrators can do anything a comic artist can do, haha~)
I did not include dialogue or an exact sense of time passing... I just wanted a sense of mood and atmosphere to come from pictures alone.

The expressionist drawing style and the colors fit perfectly to the atmosphere of the story. Paradoxally, they remember the nazi and sovietic posters used then, but at the same time they give a warm, sweet touch for the characters. Maybe Iยดm delusional, but I had the impression that the nazi soldier at the first pannel regretted for them having murdered the poor man.
And the boy really looks like the Petit Prince.

Thanks, a lot. I found myself thinking - I really need to expand my subject matter, I do mostly friendly illustrations. Doing a WWII comic in my style somehow just worked it's way out, and the result was interesting. And I had no intention of mimicing the Petit Prince, but I definitely see that.
And no, you aren't delusional. I had kind of wanted that panel to have that certain duality - confusion and regret.

my eyes are all teary now. Seriously. Not kidding. I think it looked very much like a comic though .. a very beautiful one (also I'd say you'd be a good comic artist, because making good comics without words is way harder than with words). So yeah. Really well done. And beautiful images too.
