Fish scattered under her shadow and a gator blinked one, lazy eye at the disturbance her hooves caused in the mud. Even the ravens that initially scattered overhead stared at her across the moss-draped trees.
"You've had your fun with the adults!"
Skeldr swept her head side to side, daring the spooks of the swamp to meet her eyes.
None did.
"You can prank the adults as much as you like for all I care-"
They scattered from her path, laying out a road into the hidden depths.
"-but don't you ever-"
Splash, splash, splash!
"-turn your machinations-"
Sun rays glinted at her back, shining across the still surface, flashing across the ripples. It was a gentle winking of light compared to the boiling rage in Skeldr's veins.
"-on MY daughter-"
The gator shifted, exhaling small bubbles to the surface as the sharpened iron hooves passed hear its head. It hid its eyes from the debris the ruk churned up.
"-EVER AGAIN!"
Ravens launched from the branches and vines, cawing a warning, fleeing into the murk of the swamp. Skeldr narrowed her eyes on the retreat of their wings. She lifted her head scenting. The odor she caught made her perk her ears and turned. She followed their tails into the humid deep, wading the water with steady strides.
