Description
A scorpion-like dodecapod forged by convergent evolution, the female lyu'ung is 3.5 feet long excluding the telsons. Males are smaller and average 3 feet long. Underwater, these sea scorpions can get pretty darn big. They are eaten like lobster and taste similar. The taste is somewhere between lobster and chicken, while the texture is similar to salmon.
The meat in the telsons is the most prized because it is the most tender and flavorful. The tail meat is popularly used in bisques.
The lyu'ung has an advanced respiratory system which features modified book lungs that extend into modified limbs which feature even more book lungs. This efficient breathing system is needed to support a large, warm-blooded arthropod. The lyu'ung is endothermic.
The shark squid is an apex predator which gets an average of 18 feet long for females and 16 feet long for males. Its beak is strong enough to crack through rock. It is poikilothermic. The shark squid belongs to a class of Hrr'gthr-Syposian true vertebrates called icthyomorphs, because they are reminiscent of non-tetrapod fish to varying degrees. The shark squid belongs to the carcharomorph family.
Icthyomorphs include the lineage that became wyverns. They are not closely related to arthrovertebrates (dragons and allies), which transitioned from arthropods to placoderm-likes to vertebrates.
Icthyowyverns are mammal-hipped wyverns which evolved into creatures similar to Mesozoic marine reptiles on Earth. The icthyowyvern averages 9 feet long, with males being slightly longer and heavier than females. All wyverns are warm-blooded.
The skullgill exofish also has a strong beak, though it cannot crack through rock. However, its jaws are still more than strong enough to puncture through flesh. Males and females are the same size. Poikilothermic. Also belongs to the group known as ichyomorphs, but is on the teleostomorph end of the clade, being similar to a ray finned fish. Ichthyomorphs as a clade can be separated into three major groups: panwyvernia, teleostomorphia, and carcharomorphia. Panwyvernia includes wyverns, stem-wyverns, wyvernoids and any other ichyomorph more closely related to a wyvern than the other groups of ichyomorph.
Do not fuck with the driftwood crab. It is the ultimate life form. In all seriousness, it possesses special book lungs which can also behave like gills when breathing in water, so it can breathe both on land and underwater. Despite the common name, it is not a crab, it is a dodecapod with reduced limb count for efficiency. It spends a lot of its time in sea caves. It does have eyes, but they are hidden under the cover portion of the body and are mostly just used to see where it is stepping. It averages 1.2 feet long, excluding the pincers. No notable sexual dimorphism. Poikilothermic.
It has a poorly developed form of ovoviviparity; macrolithic eggs, outer shell and all are incubated internally until they hatch. They are coated in a natural antiseptic to keep r. ovavorax from infecting them until they hatch, then the offspring, which are miniature crabs but without coloration, are released into the world to do crabby things.
All the live-bearing species on this sheet bear miniature adults with no noteworthy larval stage, since they just look like small adults. The driftwood crab has a prenatal larval stage that it develops through before it is born.
