Description
Loosely based on the 1953 sci-fi classic, Invaders From Mars. Now comes the re-imaginative sci-fi tale from Brian Vliet, Invaders. In a suburb of Los Angeles, David MacLean (Dylan O'Brien) is a normal high schooler, preparing for graduation and his upcoming college future. Not to mention he's trying to win the affection of his classmate Kathy Wilson (Stella Banderas). But, his world turns upside down when one night a large, black vessel lands in the hills behind his neighborhood. His father, George MacLean (Billy Burke) and a local police patrol go out to investigate the loud noise they hard in the hills. They come back the next morning in a dull, stern manner insisting there is nothing wrong. George convinces his wife, Mary MacLean (Morena Baccarin) to come out to the hills with him to see nothing is wrong. She, too, returns acting strangely and David knows something is not right. David heads to school as normal, but encounters others who act strangely around him. After school, David goes to the hills to see for himself what happened. David sees the charred ground and spots tunnels leading below. He investigates only to find odd noises and strange figures walking about. In a panic, David runs back to the house to warn his parents. However, they confront him about what he say and proceed to try and force him to head into the hills with them. Knowing this would be a mistake he flees and finds Kathy whose parents have also been acting strange.
David and Kathy immediately search for a professor he interned with named Stu Kelston (James Ransone). Kelston tells David and Kathy that he had been monitoring the skies for days and noticed strange activity, citing that Los Angeles is not the only city with similar activity taking place. Before they can alert the military of the situation an attack occurs in the city, and others across the world. Kelston, David, and Kathy seek Pat Blake (Shiri Appleby), an Army MD and friend of Stu's to bring in Colonel James Fielding (Reginald Veljohnson) to counteract the situation. Through intelligence they find that a coordinated attack from Mars was taking place and using hypnosis as a method of controlling people. But, before a proper strike can take place the Martians attack close by with friends and family falling around them. Kathy along with others are kidnapped by the Martians forcing David and Stu to find the ship and save her. Pat Blake, along with Fielding bring in reinforcements to combat the Martians while lending a National Guard militia to Stu and David to help the others. This leads to an all-out battle for Los Angeles.
David and Stu make it into the ship with the group of National Guardsmen and plan a counterattack from within the ship. But, before they can destroy it they must save Kathy and the others. David and Stu are captured by David's parents and brought to the leader of the Martian ship. Meanwhile the National Guardsmen battle with the Martian soldiers through the various tunnels. When David and Stu are brought to the Martian leader they ask why this is happening. The leader tells them that at one point Mars was once a great, prosperous world full of life. But, the planet died over time and forced them under ground. Knowing they couldn't survive on their planet much longer lacking necessary resources they coordinated a plan to terraform Earth and make it a new Mars. In the process, humans would slowly be turned into Martians through means of biological engineering. Even if the first wave of invasion did not work more would come until the job is done. The Martians then attempt to hypnotize David and Stu, but they fight back, killing the leader and the Martian guards. Kathy and David's parents snap out of their trance and make their way out of the ship with Stu and David. The human soldiers plant various mines and bombs throughout the ship and once they all exit they trip the switch and blow up the vessel.
When the next morning comes, Stu along with David, Kathy, and David's parents reunite with Pat Blake. Blake tells Stu that the counter offensive is working world wide, but some places were destroyed entirely. Knowing the fight for Earth could be long from over David and Kathy embrace; happy to at least be safe and together again.
