Description
The Sentry-class frigates were notable for their awesome offensive capabilities due to their integral Jupiter antimatter cannon. However, since they were repurposed mining vessels, the refits they underwent to make them suitable for combat were rushed and not completely fail safe. As such, many of them experienced catastrophic failures as a result of the excess strain placed on the antimatter containment pods. The Earth Federation Navy recognized that glaring flaw and began another refit plan for the Sentry, which eventually led to the B-Type.

The B-Type hull was a heavily modified version of what became retroactively known as the A-Type hull. Besides the antimatter cannon being replaced with a more reliable 100 cm. gauss cannon, the B-Type was extended by another 40 meters, and another plasma cannon was mounted. The antimatter containment pods were replaced with high yield generators to provide the extra energy needed for the new gauss cannon. The main reactor was upgraded to a dual-linked fusion reactor as well.

The Earth Federation Navy found the B-Types to be far more effective than the A-Types. Even though the antimatter cannons on the A-Types were more powerful than the standard plasma cannons, shields and the ablative armor laminate of ship hulls still reduced their overall effectiveness. At optimum range, the gauss cannon mounted on the B-Type could pierce shields and do considerable damage to a ship's hull. At even closer range, a direct hit could go completely through.

The A-Types are slowly being phased out of service as more B-Types are rolled off the line.
