These Spicadermids have evolved to be flatter, not only as a defense mechanism, but as a hunting strategy. When hunting their spikes flatten against the body to stay hidden. Then when a small enough animal passes by they rapidly open their mouth, sucking in their prey and/or detritus. They slowly crawl along the seafloor.
