With the crypt warders momentarily caught off guard, Valentia took the opportunity to get up and run towards the door leading down into the crypt proper. Behind her the warders faded from view. Where they went or why they vanished she did not know, but it afforded her the time to pick the lock.

The door opened slowly and revealed a stone staircase leading down. Descending it she came to a landing and a wrought-iron gate. As she stepped close to the gate sconces in the walls flared to life with orange flame. A shiver of disquiet bolted down her spine. Perhaps there was something to the rumors of magic in this place after all.

The gate wasn't locked and she cautiously opened it and peered down the corridor beyond ...
