Sometimes I wonder, If God really and truly wants to defeat Satan, which almost everyone agrees that he does, why doesn't God just snap his fingers and make Satan not exist? It'd be the simplest freaking thing to do. And no more Satan means no more corrupted humans. Methinks God's in need of the Staples Button.Related content

Well, He already has defeated Satan, plus He's merciful. While it is that easy, just making us dissappear when we go bad is not why God made us.

God created the heavens and the earth. Satan fell from heaven. Therefore god totally created Satan, so HE should be the one to take care of him.

Yea, but this is also the same god that requires a blood sacrifice to forgive sins. Defeating evil, forgiving people, stopping people who ride in iron chariots... Why bother worshipping a deity that cant do some very basic things?

What was that old quote again?
"God either can help but doesn't want to, can't help but wants to, or doesn't want to help and can't. In which case..why bother worshiping him?"

Modern translation: he is a douche, impotent, or piss useless Enjoy life and try not to be too big a dick to others.
Most likely, he does not exist and some ignorant wack-a-doos were out in the desert fasting too long and hallucinated/made the whole thing up and later generations used it to control all the ignorant and gullible people.

What was benevolent God people keep talking about again?

o3O Not someone I would consider worshiping..

Because if you defeat the villain, there's no reason to keep the show running - and the last thing they want is to stop having the ability to scare gullible people into believing fake stories!

Well, according to the bible, God's letting him roam free for a set amount of time. God's allowing Satan to try to deceive and tempt people, allowing for free will. He wants us to come to him willingly and not as an only choice.
At the end of the time God has given Satan, he will be cast into the lake of fire for eternity.
(If you want I can provide verses.)

It isn't "choice" if the people are threatened to eternal damnation.

XD that indeed could be it, I'm just saying there's no way Satan should be giving him as much trouble as he seems to be. XD

TheIrritatedDog In reply to Aonon [2011-06-04 14:34:54 +0000 UTC]
Well God isn't suppose to just control everyone's life willy nilly, Satan included. Plus it isn't a lot of trouble, all you need is a little bit of Faith and Satan has trouble dealing with whoever. People are just too lazy to even do that.

LimeGreenSquid In reply to TheIrritatedDog [2012-03-12 23:45:11 +0000 UTC]
It just shows he is not loving, because he's willing to send more poeple to eternal torture than save - and a loving god would be disgusted with himself at the thought of allowing a place like hell to exist in the first place.
He doesn't want to control our lives, but he's threatening to hurt us forever if we don't do what he says ... you see the problem there?

Some Christians, myself included, think that hell is not eternal, rather it lasts for all of time.

And how does that make it any less evil? Β And how does "eternal" not equate to for all time"? Β It still requires a god with an evil heart to create such a place in the first place.

sin-and-love In reply to LimeGreenSquid [2014-10-29 18:13:01 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad you asked. when we say that God is "eternal" we not only mean that God is everlasting, but also that God resides in eternity rather than time. If you imagine a timeline drawn onto a sheet of paper, Eternity is represented by the paper on which it is drawn. Everyone has heard how "A day for the Lord is like a thousand years," but the very next thing that is said in the bible is "A thousand years for the Lord is like a day." God doesn't "remember" the past, and "foresee" the future, God observes all of time from the big bang through this conversation to the end of the universe all in his eternal now.
Β Β The original text (I can't remember which language) has two different word for "forever" with slightly different definitions. (I'm probably not spelling them correctly.) "Kronos" meaning "all of time," and "Kairos" meaning "eternity." Whenever hell is mentioned the word "Kronos" is always used. "And they will burn in Hell for all of time."
Β Β The Bible says that time will eventually come to an end. Therefore, hell will only last for as long as time does. One of the main points of the new testament is that the spirit is immortal, so the damned souls cannot simply disappear along with hell.
Β Β There are a few references in the bible to "the purifying fire." Catholics use these verses, among others, to justify their concept of purgatory. But since it can be shown that there are much better interpretations of those verses, which do not talk about purgatory, the mention of "the purifying fire" must be referring to hell. Hell is basically a smelter for evil spirits. When you toss ore into a smelter, it melts the ore to a liquid. The stone rises to the top where it is scraped out, while the desired gold or iron or whatever sinks to the bottom where it is shaped into an ingot and allowed to cool. The smelter purifies the stony ore. Hell purifies the unrepented spirit.
