this is SO amazing... thank you for letting me know about the beauty of stereo images! it was my first time to try it and i was really blown away when the 3D image was focused. It's like a whole new world and seen with the naked (crossed) eye! Fantastic job with this one it is so beautiful, I admire you

That's awesome! How do you get the depth information in your picture? Are you projecting it on 3d geo?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

artbytheo In reply to inetgrafx [2009-02-10 10:38:09 +0000 UTC]

Howdy, thanks. Nope, no 3d programs involved. When I'm done painting the picture, I copy it and place the copy next to the original. Then I cross my eyes, and merge the images. From then I just make adjustments in one of the images by moving each element in the picture slightly to the left or right, pushing it farther into the distance or pulling it closer.

very cool, however I think it's just me because i can never do the cross-eyed thing.

Tristan-Farnon [2009-02-10 02:09:00 +0000 UTC]

That's awesome. Can you do this with any image or does it have to be composed specially for this effect?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

artbytheo In reply to Tristan-Farnon [2009-02-10 10:33:39 +0000 UTC]

hey thanks. Yep, you can do it with any image. It's just a matter of creating another version of the image you're trying to convert, but with a slightly shifted perspective ( either to the left or right). But when an image is very complex with many different layers of depth ( wires, people, etc...) it get's difficult....at least the way I do it. That's why I've been creating paintings with the intention of converting it to 3d later afterwards. I just plan the image more and keep foreground elements on seperate layers from background elements.

Hah. . Well I'm glad you can cross your eyes. I'm trying to get more people to do these 3d pictures. They aren't too difficult to put together, just kind of painful.

I like it much better as a single environment sketch, but good job regardless, very intricate

artbytheo In reply to Blackburnart [2009-02-10 11:14:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Yeah, lately I've had a hard time just making a painting, when I Could be making a painting in stereo. It isn't that I think three dimensions are better then two. It's just feels new. A whole new way of exploring a picture that's usually only portrayed in two dimensions. It's kind of silly that depth suddenly becomes fascinating when you portray it with a medium usually only used to portray things in two dimensions, even though most people take depth perception for granted and don't seem to find it fascinating at all in their "real lives".

Thanks so much for sharing this. It's awesome.

flipping the images and viewing them 'the other way' would be less hurting to the eyes.
you know like cross-eyed, but vice versa... works fine for me

I love stereograms of this kind! The effect is so striking.

In the case of this image, I found out that it's easiest if I focus on the glowing billboard in the middle while I'm first trying to make the images overlap. It's easier to tell if things are lining up correctly if you pay attention to a bright spot or contrasting area, I guess.

It's crazy how you can get those signs to look so much like they're really GLOWING... :0 Beautiful. I frickin' love these things. The 3d effect is amazing. (Even if it does hurt my eyes, haha.)

yay, I love them

Is there something like a tutorial out there on how to create such pictures or does everyone have to figure out how to do it by themelves? (when you're good enough at drawing/painting and know everything about perspective it's propbably eaier, but still...)

I kind of hope in the future stereoscopic illustration would be more common. It should be so once we all use holographic screens or something, that project a picture in space so we wont ave to cross eye anymore.

I cant ever get my eyes to cross rightr, and they don't hold. they sort of jiggle, so the whole 3D thing doesn't work for me. however, I still love your drawings. Wonderful job : )
