Description

Among the first warships designed for the reformed empire under the rule of Ian Asari, the ship exemplifies the new doctrine of heavily armored warships that seek to protect the lives of crew at any expense. There have been rumors that this vessel was co-designed by naval designers within the Earth navy that had sympathy for the rebellion led by Ian Asari but were not able to officially support either party as Earth had officially declared they would not involve themselves in the conflict for either side.

The Spire features banks of torpedo launchers scattered throughout its hull. The turrets on the flanks of the ship and torpedo bays can retract into the main hull for ease of repair. Because it predates modern Imperial naval doctrine, it often defies conventions that other ships of the line would follow. One example is its torpedo heavy loadout, something most Imperial warships would not use so heavily, if at all. The same class of torpedo that the Spire uses became the standard torpedo for Imperial bombers, as well, due to the ease on logistics of having capital ships and fighters using the same torpedoes. While not a dedicated carrier, the Spire's upper hangar bay can carry a fighter loadout comparable to a Veneras-class light carrier but lacks the space to service heavily damaged starfighters when compared to dedicated carriers. The lower hangar normally houses shuttles that are used to ferry cargo to and from the cruiser, but can be set up as an additional fighter bay if the situation calls for it.

While criticized for having a frontal bridge at the nose of the ship, the windows along the nose of the ship form a large observation deck rather than a proper command deck. The true command deck of the vessel is buried deep within the hull. The observation deck typically has more sensors and cameras than crew in it during combat operations, but can serve as a backup bridge in the situation that the main command deck is struck in battle.
