Sheltering Home (Homestuck x Reader)
Introduction.

You sat in your bed, staring at the clock. It was only 7:23, and the Saturday before winter break. You were alone in your house, since your dad was somewhere in England researching some long-forgotten chapel for his newest book and your mother was touring the country, performing the latest surgery in front of expectant medical students.

You were fairly used to this though; your parents would often disappear for months at a time. It used to be a pain, but now that you were sixteen and in possession of your own driver’s license, you found you can deal. However, it was lonely.

That’s probably why you adopted so many animals from the local animal shelter. Well, that and the fact that your best friend worked there. Beth was 18, and had somehow managed to become the entire weekend staff at the shelter. She would always call you up with some poor animal that was about to be put down and beg you to adopt them.

Since you had both an abundance of space and money, you usually gave in to her requests. That’s how you had got Risa, your three legged cat, Milo, your one eyed dog, Nina, the pot bellied pig, and your other best friend.

Dave was a raven – at least you thought so, since he could say a few words. One of his wings was mostly unusable and pretty fugly too, but you loved the bird anyway. Even if all he could say was “Dave”, “Sup”, and “Apple Juice”. You had been trying to get him to say your name too, but gave up after two weeks of screech/shout matches.

Anyway, you loved your animals, and they did help to fill in for your folks, but you were still pretty lonely. Even if Dave had broken out of his cage again and was snuggled up on your pillow, waiting for you to get up for breakfast.

You were always shocked that he didn’t get eaten by Risa.

Anyway, you managed to drag yourself out of bed, throw on some clothes and pick up Dave from his spot on your pillow. “Sup?” he squawked at you as you carried him to the kitchen. You sighed and placed him on the back of a chair.

You began your search for food, but decided to answer the bird all the same. “Nothing, and that’s the problem. I’m just so… bored, lonely, irritated… take your pick.” You said. You shook your head a bit and laughed at yourself. Dave didn’t need to know about your problems. “So, what do you want for breakfast?” you asked.

Dave tilted his head in a way that gave you the impression that he was shocked by your incompetence. “Apple Juice.” He replied. You rolled your eyes. Should have seen that one coming.

You had just finished cutting up an apple for Dave and popping a piece of bread in the toaster for yourself when your phone rang. Beth was calling.

You flipped open your phone and grinned. “Yo, so who’s the newest adoptable?” you greeted your friend. You could here Beth huff a bit and chuckle nervously.

“Uh, well, I… {Name}, I’m actually in the middle of a, uh, well… I’m in a strange situation. Could you please, please come down, like, now?!” she asked. She sounded almost panicked. That was never a good sign.

“I’ll be there in a few minutes.” You promised, before flipping the phone closed and hurrying to feed your other animals. You had just refilled Nina’s food bowl when your toast popped up. Taking a moment to butter it, you grabbed your purse and dashed out, forgetting to put Dave back in his cage.

Dave watched you go before sighing to himself. He fluttered back into his cage and closed the door, all the while being mindful of Risa. He might be a stubborn and wild bird, but he knew better than to be out of his cage without you to protect him from the cat.

You pulled up at the shelter and raced to the door. It was still locked, since the shelter didn’t actually open until ten. You had to pound on the door for a while before you finally got Beth’s attention.

She flung the door open and hugged you. “Oh my gosh {Name}, I’m so glad you’re here. You’ll never believe what showed up at the door this morning.” She whispered as she pulled you to the “Employees Only” section of the lobby.
