Description
This is fellow Deviant ~BfME2Graphite.
I chose to sketch his portrait for a contest #PortraitPencilArt is having for members to draw members because I liked the angle of his face and because apparently due to drawing Russell Crowe too many times, I've developed a penchant for drawing stubble. *grin*
I do not like the new paper I just bought; this drawing didn't turn out as well as I would've liked because I discovered I could NOT blend, the paper is just too rough. It will be okay for rough sketches but not for smooth drawings.

Well, there are two or three I like much better than mine so it will be a miracle if I place at all!

Oh wow, what a gorgeous angle and the graphite touch makes it even more wonderful. I envy you for making everything blend so well, despite not having the best paper to do so.
Definite . =3

Thank you! I didn't think this blended well at all boo hoo but it was a good exercise in trying to make the pencil blend by crosshatching and other techniques. Thanks for your encouraging comment!

What paper did you use? I wanna know what to avoid
I like this a lot. It really is a cool angle and despite the challenge the paper gave you I think you did a great job.

Strathmore 400 series "medium" instead of "smooth". Lately I've been using Strathmore 300 series Bristol and I like it much better. This paper was so bad I just couldn't draw on it... bummer, too, cuz now I know there's no way I can win with this as I had to leave it a rough sketch instead of being able to turn it into a full fledged drawing.

I think you have a shot at winning with this. It's not bad, it's just not how you wanted it to come out...but people don't know how you wanted it to look!
Have you tried drawing on hot press watercolor paper? It's my favorite texture...it's just a little too expensive for me to just use graphite on.

Don't sell yourself short - the drawing still turned out excellent even if you didn't have the time to turn it into a full-fledged portrait!
You really find a huge difference between Strathmore 400 and 300 Bristol? I've found both to be about the same, only difference being I have more of the 400 11X14" in my stockpile.

thank you!! Very encouraging
Regarding the paper: Here's the thing, I didn't grab my usual giant sheet of Strathmore 300 last time I went to the store, what I used here was from a pad of "Strathmore Drawing Medium". That's all it says on the front of the pad. Normally I buy huge sheets of Strathmore Vellum Bristol 300 and cut them down and the art store was out and someone suggested this paper saying it was just as good. WRONG. It's not good for someone wanting smooth, fine details. It'll make a great sketching paper, but it's not smooth like the vellum bristol. As for if I can tell a difference twixt the 300 and 400, that remains to be seen when I start a new drawing on my newly acquired huge sheet of 400 tomorrow, and compare it against a scrap of 300 I have leftover from another drawing. I'm very excited to try it out.

Ahhh, okay, I know which Strathmore Drawing Paper you're referring to now. I've never done any of my projects using the "Strathmore Drawing Medium", only Strathmore Smooth Bristol, but knowing you're an advocate of the Vellum, I may try it out more in the future
BTW, did I ever ask what type of pencils (mech, wood-encased, or something else) and blenders (if any) you use for your drawings? I'm very curious because all of my learning experiences since retaking up drawing has been 50/50 experimentation and picking up tips from great artists such as yourself here on DA.

I pretty much only use mechanical pencils, but for this drawing I had to switch over to my seldom used wood-encased graphite pencils (I use the Sanford or Berol "Turquoise series", all strenghts, F, 6H, HB, 2B-B9). I don't use a tortillion much, I don't like the lack of control; normally I lay down my graphite and go over it gently with a couple of different strengths of watercolor brushes, some soft, some firm. I can't do that with rough paper, of course; in this drawing, what blending I did was with my finger covered with a piece of tissue. I didn't much like the results of that technique, it's too ... unrefined. Try using a brush in circular motions to blend, see what you think.

I'll definitely have to try using circular motions with the paint brush for my next graphite piece
