Every time you went into Mother's house, you would immediately know that it was Mother's house. There was a distinct smell to the place, like the decaying of paper and souring of age, and no matter how many times I came back to this house I just couldn't get used to it. I swallowed, feeling the toast from just now threaten to come right back up my throat, and walked further into the house. Up the rickety set of stairs to the study on the second floor, and there Mother was, her back turned to me as she fiddled with… something. Whatever that was.
"Hey, Mother…" she turned around and gave me a glance, her green eyes seeming to pierce right through me like always. "Your work is on the side table." I turned towards a small table set just beneath a window, giving whoever sat down at it a full view of the main house. It was routine at this point and so I didn't bother asking what she wanted from me - just solve whatever puzzle or task it was that she gave me and I would be done for the day. I'd heard from Sis that apparently Mother was some kind of genius researcher… or used to be, so that sort of eccentricity wasn't that unexpected, but there was a part of me that always wondered whether there was some sort of point to all of this teaching. If there was, at least Mother had never told me it.
Today, a small cube sat on the table, its surface completely smooth and seamless. I picked the cube up and turned it over in my hands, poking and prodding for any hidden buttons or catches, but there was nothing at all. Which I should have sort of expected… if there was one thing Mother was not, it was easy to understand. Still holding the mysterious cube, I closed my eyes and focused on it, feeling my mind brush against the energy emanating from the cube. Unlike the steady, gently smoldering aura that Sis had or the bright, vibrant one of Pri, the energy of this cube felt inert, unmoving - well, it was an inanimate object after all. The emitted energy was just as smooth and flawless as the cube itself - ah! Or seemed to be.
There was a small kink in the cube's energy, cleverly hidden so that it would be extremely, extremely hard to find… but not for me! With invisible hands I latched onto the kink, unraveling it like a knot, and then- I heard a small click, and opened my eyes to see the cube split down the middle, revealing that it was hollowed out inside… but as for what exactly it had been hiding? There was nothing at all. That was how these "lessons" with Mother always went - a puzzle for me to solve, with no explanation given at all, and seemingly no purpose or reward. But hey, at least they didn't take too much time… or didn't seem to, as one look at the clock told me that half an hour had already passed, slipping by without my noticing. "Bye, Mother!" She didn't respond as I left her study, went back downstairs into the living room, passed outside through the front door, and took a deep, deep breath of the fresh outdoor air.
