Description
It was a silent night in Canterlot. There wasn’t a single being out. The sky was clear, the stars were shinning, and the moon was full. One star, however, appeared where none had before. It seemed to grow in size, slowly at first. Then, in a split second, it expanded into a circle of light that filled the sky in an aurora of gold. It made a sound similar to clanging metal. A streak of light came from the center of the golden hurricane, and it fell towards the city’s castle with a lasting whistle. The aurora stopped as quickly as it began. The streak of light dashed behind the castle. The next noise heard was an earth shattering bang.------------
The doors of the blue box flew open. Smoke poured through the opening. The Doctor jumped out, coughing and gasping for fresh air. He took a minute to recover. Once he regained a steady breath, he looked up to see where he was. He was in a crater. “Oh, bullocks,” he said, “I’ve only been here for two minutes and I’ve already destroyed a good portion of property. I hope I don’t get in as much trouble as last time.” Suddenly, he stopped. He noticed something was off. Something was different. “Hello. Hello. Testing. Testing. 1 2 1 2,” he said to himself. “Hm. New voice. It’s a bit higher than I’d prefer, but, oh well; I guess I’ll get used to it.” He paused. There was something else. He sounded British. “I’m not Scottish anymore? Oh man! I rather enjoyed that.”
He touched above his eyes. “At least I don’t have those giant eyebrows anymore.” He paused. He noticed his hands, or rather his lack of hands. He appeared to have hooves. “What? Oh, don’t tell me…” He began to examine the rest of his body. “I’m a horse. Great. Well, I suppose it could be worse.” He noticed his coat, and the horrible state it was in. “It’s gonna take weeks to get this fixed!” He looked towards the box. The smoke seemed to have cleared. “TARDIS really took a beating.” He walked towards to the doors. “Don’t worry old girl. We’ll fix you up.” He stepped inside, took off his coat, and walked towards the central control console, which still had a couple sparks coming off of it. He circled around it and looked at it in every direction possible. “Nothing is horribly destroyed, so there’s some good news. You should still be able to fly.” He put his hoof to a switch and pulled.
The room began to rumble and shake. An electric whir filled the air. The Doctor stumbled back. He jumped at the control panel and hit it with a thud. He pushed a series of buttons and the rumbling stopped. After catching his breath, he looked upwards at the central column. “What was all that about, eh?” he said. He pulled up a monitor with a cracked screen. “The coordinates are set correctly. I’ll try resetting them.” He turned to the opposite side of the console and typed in the information: London, Earth, 2014. The screen flashed in response: LOCATION NONEXISTENT. The Doctor stared confused at the screen. “What?” he said to no one in particular. “What do you mean “nonexistent”? It’s one of the places we visit the most!” He paused, and put his hoof to his chin. “Unless…” He pressed on a lever. “Unless we went through the rift.” He looked at the monitor. “Oh my God! We did! That shouldn’t even be possible! I really am that good!” The console gave off a short whir. “Yes. Yes. I know. You’re brilliant as well,” he said to the machine. He paused. He spoke in a more serious tone, “It’s a miracle that we made it. We should have been torn apart at a molecular level. I don’t think we could survive another trip through. Looks like we’re stuck in this universe.”
The Doctor began to pace around the console. He paused. “Hm. Well, I guess we should start exploring then. If we’re going to be here for a while, we might as well get a feel for the place.” He looked around the room. Sparks we’re still coming off the walls. Metal panels were peeling off of the framework. “Hm. You’re not in any condition to go anywhere far are you?” He put his hoof to his chin. “We landed in a town. I guess I can start here. You seem able to make a short trip.” He hit more buttons and levers. “We’ll go to next morning, in an alleyway somewhere.” He pulled a large lever. The central column began to rise and fall. The room was filled with the groaning wheeze of the engines. The Doctor looked up with a smile. “Andiamo!”
------------
The sun was high above Canterlot. In an alleyway, a groaning wheeze was heard. It grew louder and louder. A blue box began to appear, fazing into existence. The blue box became solid, and the noise stopped. Its doors flew open, and out stepped the Doctor. He still wore his shirt, which was still torn and bloodstained. He closed the doors behind him, and looked at his box. “Alright, I’ll get going and let you repair yourself in peace.” He turned and left the alleyway. He found himself in what appeared to be a town square. A town square filled with horses, some of which had wings or horns. “Well,” he said, “Fancy that. A civilization of horses.” He paused and looked at the citizens. “Hm. No. No, too short to be horses. Pony fits the description better.” He looked around. Everything was colorful and clean. He looked at his shirt. “Yeah, first things first. I need a new outfit for this new face.” He looked at the various buildings on the block, ignoring all of the ponies staring at him and his destroyed outfit, and found a small boutique.
“Ah ha! Perfect!” he said and walked through the door. A little bell dinged above him. Across the room there was a unicorn mare behind a counter. She had a blue mane and a light purple coat. Her back was facing him. “Welcome to Thread and Needle! How can I be of servi-” She turned to face the Doctor, and saw the state of his outfit. “Oh sweet Princess Luna! What happened?” she said. The Doctor looked at her nonchalantly. “Oh, long story. You wouldn’t be interested. I was hoping I could find an outfit here.” The mare looked at him. “Um… of course. Of course.” She motioned for him to follow. “Come along.”
They walked into the next room. It was lined with fabrics and outfits. “We just got a new shipment of pre-made outfits. Care to take a look?”
“I don’t see why not.”
“Perfect. Right this way.”
The two walked over to a line of outfits. The Doctor looked over all of them, critiquing each one. “Too green. Too yellow. Too poofy. Not poofy enough. Too frilly. Too shiny. Do you have anything else?” The mare stared for a second. “Well, I have some custom-made items. There are some coats, scarfs and ties you could look at.”
“Excellent! Lead the way.” The two walked into another room, similar to the last one. The mare looked over the outfits. “I designed all of these myself. I made most of them as well.” She picked up a striped scarf. “What do you think of…?” The Doctor had directed his attention elsewhere. He was looking at a neon green necktie. “How much for this?” The mare looked surprised. “That? I did that for practice. I was going to throw it out.” The Doctor looked even more surprised. “What? Throw it out? Why would you throw out such a beautiful piece of clothing?”
“The color is horrible and the stitching is off.”
“Well, that just adds character.” The mare stared at him. “I guess one pony’s trash really is another’s treasure. If you want it, I guess you can take it.” The Doctor began to change his outfit. “Perfect! My thanks to you.” He threw his destroyed shirt in a trash bin, and put on the tie. Something caught his eye. “What’s this?” He pointed to his flank. There was an hourglass symbol on it. The mare gave another confused look. “What? You mean your cutie mark?”
“Is that what it’s called?”
“Yes. How do you not know that?”
“I’m new to this place. I still need to gather some information about it.” The mare stared at him, decided he had a few screws lose, and went along with it. “Your mark shows your special talent. Are you a glass maker or something?”
“I’m a time traveler.”
The mare decided he was nuts. “Uh huh.” She paused. “Well, if you want to learn about the area, you could always visit the Canterlot Royal Library at the castle.” The Doctor smiled. “Brilliant! That’s where I’ll start. Thank you for your time, miss.” He walked out of the boutique. The mare returned to the counter. “What a strange pony.”
------------
The castle was enormous, which made it easy to find. The Doctor looked up at its spires. “This is brilliant! The internal structure must be extremely intricate. He noticed the crowds of ponies walking in and out of the castle. “Must be a peaceful place if they don’t worry about random citizens walking in.” He walked through a corridor, and stopped at a window. He looked out over a garden. It was the same one he dug a crater into, and the crater was gone. “I guess we went a little farther then the following morning. It would have taken years to get all that fixed.”
He continued to wander around the halls until he finally stumbled into the library. The library, like every other room, was huge. The shelves reached to the top of the ceiling, which was three stories up. Each one held at least a hundred books. “Oh my… I don’t even know where to start!” He walked down a row of shelves. He picked a random book, flipped it open, and began to read.
------------
Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there were two regal sisters who ruled together, and created harmony for all the land. To do this, the eldest used her unicorn powers to raise the sun at dawn; the younger brought out the moon to begin the night. Thus, the two sisters maintained balance for their kingdom and their subjects, all the different types of ponies. But as time went on, the oldest became more resentful. The ponies gazed in awe at the star-filled night her younger sister brought forth, but shunned and shielded their eyes from her shining sun. One fateful day, the older unicorn refused to lower the sun to make way for the night. The younger sister tried to reason with her, but bitterness in the older one’s heart had transformed her into a wicked mare of darkness: Black Hole Sun.
She blackened the sun, shrouding the land in a destructive darkness. Reluctantly, the younger sister harnessed the most powerful magic known to ponydom: the Elements of Harmony. Using the magic of the Elements of Harmony, she defeated her older sister, and banished her permanently in the stars. The younger sister took on responsibility for both sun and moon, and harmony has been maintained in Equestria ever since.
------------
“An interesting story, is it not?” The Doctor jumped and spun around. Behind him stood a much taller pony. She had both wings and a horn. She was dark blue with a mane like a nebula. Black jewelry covered her neck. “My apologies. I did not mean to startle you,” she said calmly. The Doctor smiled. “Oh, that’s quite alright. I’ve had worse scares.” He looked at her jewels and her crown. “Judging from your attire, I’d say you’re rather important around here. Would I be correct?”
The mare chuckled. “Yes. You would be. You are not from around here?” The Doctor chuckled back. “No. I’m from… far away.”
“From Trottingham? You have the accent of its residents.”
“No. Much farther than that. It’s…” He paused. “It’s a difficult subject for me to talk about.” The mare nodded. “I understand.” The Doctor decided to change the subject. “So, what is your title, then?”
“I am Princess Luna, the ruler of this land.” The Doctor looked confused. “Wouldn’t that make you a queen?” Luna shrugged. “The title was chosen many years ago. The term “princess” has become traditional.” The Doctor nodded. “I see. Queens are rubbish anyway. I haven’t had very many good experiences with queens.” Luna gave a smile. “Oh, you work with royalty, then?”
“Um... Well, if you stretch the definition of work. You see, I’m a traveler. I sometimes stumble into political events. Heck, I’ve had a few titles of my own. President, king…” He paused. “Renegade,” he mumbled. The princess kept smiling. “And what title do you give yourself?”
“I’m the Doctor.”
“Doctor who?
“Just the Doctor.”
Luna nodded. “And your travels have brought you to Equestria?”
“Yes,” he lied. “However, my means of transport is…unavailable for the time being. So, I’ll be staying in town for a few days.”
“Is there anything I could arrange to help you with your transport problem?” The Doctor smiled. “No thanks. I can handle that myself. Thanks for the offer, though. Besides, I would rather like to learn a bit more about this place. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen before!” Then, the princess came up with an idea. “If that is the case, I think I can help you.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yes. You see, one of our annual traditions is what we call the “Summer Sun Celebration”. Every year we host a party to celebrate the summer solstice. The entire city participates, so you can imagine the difficulty in managing it.”
“So, what do you want me to do?” The princess levitated a scroll out of her saddlebag. The Doctor looked at the aura of her horn, wondering the mechanics of the action. Luna unrolled the scroll, and passed it to the Doctor. “On this scroll is a list of five ponies helping to organize the most important aspects of the party. I would like you to check up on them. That way, the party can progress faster, and you can learn a bit about the city.” The Doctor folded up the paper, and stuffed it in his collar. He gave a smile. “Sounds like a plan. I’ll start right away.”
“My thanks to you, Doctor”
“Same to you, princess. Andiamo!” They shook hooves and parted ways.
------------
The Doctor walked through town until he came to his first location: the center of the city. The large clearing was filled with streamers, balloons, and flags. Many ponies were wandering about and having a good time. Music was playing through speakers in the background. This was where he’d find the first pony on his list.
He looked around to see if anyone looked like they were in charge. He found two pegasi hoisting up a banner. A third one with a gray coat was directing them. “A little to the left. Hm. A little more. Actually, no, a bit to the right.” The two with the banner seemed agitated. “Make up your mind!” The gray pegasus blushed. “Um, right there is fine.” The Doctor came over and tapped on her shoulder.
“Excuse me, miss.” She turned, and the Doctor saw her face. Her eyes were off. They were crooked. She gave him a smile. “Oh, hello. You must be new here.” The Doctor smiled back. “Indeed. I’m here on special business. I’m looking for the activities organizer. Do you happen to know a miss Ditzy Do?” The mare’s smile grew wider. “That would be me!”
