Bio: Johannes Elias Teijsmann was a Dutch biologist, botanist, and plant collector, who was also a member of the Dutch and Indonesian Rites of the Templar Order.  Originally born in the city of Arnhem, Teijsmann travelled to the Dutch East Indies in 1830. He served as a gardener to Governor General Johannes van den Bosch, who assigned him as the Director of the ‘s Lands Plantentuin in the colonial city of Buitenzorg the following year, and it was a post he held until 1869.

Under Teijsmann’s leadership, the gardens thrived and expanded.  He travelled on several expeditions across the islands to bring plants from around the colonies to the gardens in Buitenzorg.  Most notably, he introduced cassava plants to help alleviate famines in the Dutch East Indies, and Cinchona trees, which produced valuable quinine that could be used to help treat Malaria.  The latter introduction ultimately caused a rift between Teijsmann and a few of his colleges who disagreed with the effectiveness of Cinchona, though the issue was soon settled by experimentation and testing.  Teijsmann’s personal love of palm trees led to him personally introducing them to the Dutch East Indies. By 1863, Teijsmann’s work helped the gardens reach their absolute peak.

After resigning from his position as director of the gardens in 1869, Teijsmann mainly focused on his allegiance to the Templar cause.  By 1882, the Grand Master of the Indonesian Rite, Huibert Gerard Boumeester, had discovered clues that could lead them to a Precursor Temple hidden somewhere on the islands.  Teijsmann was one of the notable Templar agents whom Boumeester entrusted to aid in the search, but the scientist didn't get much of a chance to complete any serious investigations.  He was assassinated by the Indonesian Assassin, Apsarini Rajawali, in the ‘s Lands Plantentuin, in June 1882.
