Description

Hey everybody! Baconforbreakfast426 here, back again with another deviation!

Of all the alternate futures shown in MLP’s season 5 finale, the apocalypse timeline is by far the most mysterious. Every other timeline shown has a clear culprit behind it (although how things turned out that way is up for debate), but the apocalypse timeline is empty, with no life, dust choking the atmosphere, and no clear culprit behind the destruction. What kind of threat could have the ability to turn Equestria into a wasteland like that? That’s what I’m figuring out today. Over the past few months, I’ve put my nose to the ground to sniff out who/what is the true cause of this apocalypse and uncover the hoodwinkers along the way. For this theory, I’m gonna focus on only the threats from seasons 1-5 that didn’t have timelines shown, don’t connect back to the Rainboom butterfly effect and the mane six, and who I feel have world-ending potential, as I feel the culprit has to be one we’ve seen in that run of time. That means as much as I want to discuss if it could’ve been Daybreaker keeping the sun up and killing all life, a popular theory among many people, she doesn’t qualify (she would’ve been in the early concept phase at most when the season 5 finale came out, and even that’s a stretch. Not to mention, we’ve seen in the Nightmare Moon timeline that Equestrian life can survive deprivation of cold and heat, likely through magical means, so I don’t think eternal day would have a different effect. We also have no evidence Celestia would even turn evil as a result of any timeline seen.) I also won’t be including any of the EG villains, as all of them tie back to the butterfly effect the Rainboom caused (meaning Midnight Sparkle, a popular suspect, also doesn’t qualify. Not to mention, she appears way too soon to cause the damage we see). So, without further ado, let’s go down the list of suspects and figure out who caused the destruction seen in this dark future.

Parasprites: Since things will get complex pretty quickly, I’d like to start with something simple: the ever-pesky beings that are parasprites. They nearly devoured all the food and buildings of Ponyville in season 1 before the Mane Six stepped in and led them out of town. But in a world where no one stood in their way, is it possible they would have kept devouring all of Equestria until there was nothing left? Doubtful. Equestria has lived with parasprites for years, and there’s never been too big of a problem. Twilight was also the one who caused them to eat buildings, and she would likely remain in Canterlot without the Rainboom happening. Even if Fluttershy triggered the infestation, Celestia can handle this scenario, likely having to stop the invasion herself. The same points apply to the dragon in Dragonshy if Fluttershy wasn’t sent to handle it. Speaking of which-

Spike: I know this may seem crazy at first, but hear me out. Another theory I’ve seen thrown around was that the culprit was Spike. The theory goes like this. If Twilight didn’t hatch Spike, he would have gone to someone who didn’t give a crap about dragon care, then become the Dragon Lord and destroy everything. This has some major problems right from the start. For one, Twilight was a really special case of powerful magic. Two, if hatched dragons all went to successful students, we would have seen a lot more dragons roaming around the place (it was likely a special privilege given to Twilight for being Celestia’s personal student). Most hatched dragons were likely sent back to the dragon lands. The third reason is the reasoning I listed above: Equestria co-existed with dragons for years with no issue. Four is one of the most important issues: time. From the Gauntlet of Fire to the season 5 finale isn’t nearly enough time for a dragon army to destroy everything in a war. Not even King Sombra and Tirek were able to accomplish that, and they had magic on their side. Even if they achieved victory quickly, we wouldn’t have seen the entire world as a wasteland. We would’ve seen the world as more of a dragon-dominated place. So yeah, Spike didn’t cause the apocalypse. These last criteria also eliminate Garble as a suspect, as he’s also shown later on that he isn’t a world-ender: he just wants to prove himself. The fact that Twilight not owning Spike also meant Twilight wouldn’t save him and aggravate Garble to hate ponies only rubs salt in the wound.

Wendigos: This is also a potential world-ender. It nearly did so when Equestria was founded, so it could very well do it again if Equestria became divided like in the series finale (which is why the G5 synopsis makes zero sense to me). A pegasus filly getting shot by magic could very well snowball into something worse and break Equestria apart, causing the Wendigos to return. However, this theory has a few hitches. The wendigos always bring snow when they attack, and the apocalypse timeline is pretty much the exact opposite of that. Celestia didn’t notice the subtle efforts of the series finale division, but a conflict as obvious as that would likely have caught her attention and made her intervene. Seriously, G5’s synopsis makes zero sense. Did the Legion of Doom come along and kill Twilight or something so she couldn’t intervene and stop them from dividing Equestria, then try and stop the wendigos? My brain hurts.

Ahuizotl: While most of what I’ve discussed so far has been a bit in your face, this is one I haven’t seen brought up at all. Back in season 4, Ahuizotl was out to collect a ring that would bring about 800 years of heat to the world. This could very well have burned all life off the surface of the Earth. However, we’re shown a couple of things that could put this idea in jeopardy. One, Ahuizotl is shown to not be a world ender: he’s just really desperate to guard his jungle job. Two, we’re never told that it’s world-ending heat. It could have very well just turned Equestria into a jungle for all we know. Equestria could have survived it before, for crying out loud. Sure, it could have been Ahuizotl who caused this, but the evidence just doesn’t quite add up. Not to mention, there’s an even better candidate I’ll get onto later.

Yaks: This is another overlooked candidate for this spot, merely because Rutherford threatened to go to war against Equestria. However, this has major problems right off the bat. Celestia would likely handle the meeting in this scenario and avoid this war threat. There’s also the time issue I mentioned earlier. So yeah, there’s a reason this is overlooked.

Starlight Glimmer: This has been discussed a lot by the fandom due to one little detail. Twilight and Starlight’s colors seem to dim as soon as they enter the apocalypse timeline, just like their colors dim in the season 5 premiere. However, this notion has one huge hitch. In almost every case we’ve seen ponies drained of their color, it was as a result of a direct magical trigger. The trigger, in this case, would be their cutie marks being stolen, and nothing of the sort happens. Ponies can’t simply enter an area this affects and lose their color, as we’ve seen in the Rainbow Roadtrip special. The only cases we’ve seen of ponies losing their color without a magical trigger were with Pinkie Pie and the crystal ponies (I’m gonna publish a theory connecting them in the near future). Thus, I feel pretty confident saying that this dulling of color is merely due to lighting and, as I suggested earlier, the dust in the air. There’s also the time issue of it all holding this theory back. Starlight is also not shown to be a world-ender or a world-conqueror (although she did technically cause that timeline to exist), only wanting a cutie markless society (she said herself she prefers waiting for ponies to find the village rather than going out and rounding ponies up), so she has that going against her, too.

The True Culprit: Honestly, I had my work cut out for me trying to figure this whole thing out. Every turn I seemed to take took me down a dead end. However, around Christmas, the answer finally came to me. I was just sitting in a moving car; starving due to missing breakfast, sleep-deprived, barely able to think in a straight line, and doing nothing but look out the window and think back on how hard this case was turning out to be. That’s when it hit me. I realized there was one culprit I completely forgot about, one that not only has world-ending potential but would wreak havoc without the Mane Six there and fits near perfectly into the time frame needed: the Tantabus. I believe the Tantabus caused the apocalypse timeline. You might think it sounds crazy, but just hear me out as I explain my reasoning.

In case you haven’t seen the episode Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep? where the Tantabus was introduced, let me give you a brief summary of what it is. The Tantabus was a being Luna created to give her the same nightmare every night and punish herself for the evil she caused as Nightmare Moon. However, when the Mane Six appeared in her dream, it spread to their minds to turn their dreams into nightmares, and even further when Pinkie dreamed all of Ponyville was with her. Luna made it so all of Ponyville was having one dream, but the Tantabus was quickly gaining the power to get into the real world to turn it into a living nightmare. However, it gained pretty much all of its power from Luna’s guilt, and thanks to the Mane Six, she conquered this guilt and destroyed the Tantabus, saving everyone. However, in a world where the Mane Six didn’t exist, the Tantabus could very well have got into the real world to wreak all sorts of havoc, potentially world-ending enough to cause the apocalypse timeline we saw.

For the Tantabus to have caused this timeline, Luna would first have to be reformed. Is this even possible in the timelines we see? The short answer is yes. In the Discord timeline, we see Discord chasing Celestia and a reformed Luna, confirming a world with a reformed Luna is possible. But how would this even happen? Celestia could’ve gotten desperate in the war against Sombra if and when it came to fruition in that timeline, but there is another possibility I find to be a lot more interesting. A while back, I heard an idea posed about the Discord timeline: that after Fluttershy saved a crystallized Rainbow Dash (most likely through an indirect manner), the latter came to appreciate Fluttershy’s gentle demeanor more, and when Nightmare Moon returned, they helped to reform Luna and bring the two sisters back together. While that is a little iffy for the Discord timeline (especially how they got to Ponyville in the first place), it makes a lot more sense for this one. Fluttershy would’ve been on the ground, seen the animals, and had a reason to move to ground level later on in life. Thus, they were in more of a setting to move to Ponyville and be in a setting where they could pull this reformation off. Thus, I’d like to present you with what I believe happened: How the Apocalypse Timeline Came to Be.

Once upon a time in Equestria, there lived two pegasus friends who worked together to bring harmony to their homeland. The elder was the shy and quiet one who always valued compassion, while the younger was the bold and brash one who, despite being the most loathsome creation I ever laid eyes on, encouraged the elder to take action. Come the thousandth Summer Sun Celebration, these two pegasi were forced to use these combined skills when an evil alicorn named Nightmare Moon made her appearance and vowed to shroud the land in everlasting night. Celestia was nowhere to be seen, leaving nopony to stop Nightmare Moon, or so she thought. With a little encouragement from the younger, the two friends stood their ground against the new threat standing before them. While the younger was swift to fight the dark alicorn (and to fail miserably like the egocentric little shit she was), the elder saw something in her she could sympathize with. Thus, when she got over the emotion of seeing her friend getting what was rightfully coming to her since the moment she was born, the elder put her best hoof forward and comforted the dark alicorn. It took some work, but eventually, the elder friend was able to reason with Nightmare Moon, changing her back into the legendary Princess Luna. With a whisk of her horn, she brought her elder sister Celestia back from the moon, where Luna was also imprisoned for years. Peace was restored, and everyone lived happily ever after, or so it seemed.

Unbeknownst to the citizens of Equestria, Princess Luna had immense guilt stirring inside her for what she did, eventually pushing her to create the Tantabus, a dark being who gave her the same nightmare every night. This creature was never meant to leave her dreamscape, but all that changed when the Crystal Empire returned, bringing with it a crazed tyrant named King Sombra who declared war on Equestria. All of a sudden, all that was on anyone’s mind was the war, and all that was on Luna’s mind was leading her army against Sombra with her sister. The two pegasi that helped her did their best to help lead the charge against Sombra, but as much as this battered and beat them, it was nothing compared to what was to come. One night, the two pegasi and her army appeared in Luna’s dream, causing the Tantabus to spread faster than Luna could track, making her guilt grow and grow and feeding the Tantabus more and more. Before anyone could fight back, the Tantabus gained enough power from the ponies’ dreams and Luna’s guilt to escape the dreamscape altogether. Wherever it went, the Tantabus wreaked havoc and slowly but surely turned Equestria and its surrounding lands into a wasteland. Every town in its way was ground into dust. The Crystal Empire, Equestria, and all other nations teamed up to stop the Tantabus, but even their combined efforts were no match for its immense power. All this destruction only caused Luna’s guilt to grow more, and even the two pegasi’s attempts to console her wouldn’t bring her out. Eventually, even they were claimed in the battle as what remained of Equestria and the surrounding lands became inhospitable. When almost all life was gone, Celestia and Luna teamed up in one last-ditch attempt to stop the Tantabus. However, the Tantabus was now more powerful than both of them, eventually costing Celestia her life. Struck down by all the destruction and death she felt she had caused, Luna gave up fighting after her sister’s death, allowing the Tantabus to claim her life and the remaining life on her world to die. Without Luna’s guilt to sustain it, the Tantabus also faded away, leaving in its wake a deserted apocalypse where nothing could survive. And that was the end of Equestria.

The End

So, that’s what I believe happened. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy grew close after the former got shot, causing them to team up to reform Luna and eventually appear in Luna’s dreamscape during the Crystal War alongside the army, resulting in the Tantabus getting into the real world and destroying everything. Of course, we don’t know if the Tantabus could cause this wasteland with its powers, but it’s the closest fit we have for the culprit of this destruction. We never saw the Tantabus get into the real world, so who’s to say it couldn’t wipe out all life in Equestria? It’s certainly food for thought. The Tantabus could have gotten into the real world without the Crystal War, but I prefer the war explanation better. It would certainly cause Luna’s guilt to be much higher and make the Tantabus spread easier. What I like about this explanation is that time isn’t as much of a constraint. It could’ve even happened around season 3 in that world, for all we know. In the end, it’s all a story about Luna’s guilt growing out of control to the point where she let it kill her. If this theory is true, then it’s a sad one, especially for me. If you’re familiar with my channel’s past, you’ll know I’ve had a rough history with depression and guilt (the important thing is I made it out okay. Don’t look into that part of my life. Just don’t.). Just take comfort this wasn’t the way the main timeline played out.

In case you couldn’t tell, I hate Rainbow Dash with a burning passion (she’s such a bad influence) and I love making these theories. It’s something I’m good at and it's something I enjoy doing. It’s almost like it’s my life’s purpose. Making theories is pretty much the only detective work you can do whenever you want without ever leaving your house (and with no risk for your life). Someday, my 17-year-old mind might even solve real-world mysteries. Until then, I’m content to sit down and make my theories to kingdom come. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna portal to this apocalypse timeline and shoot the Tantabus with a dissolver ray, all the while singing this parody of Emergency Meeting.

Don’t try to cease and desist

You caused the apocalypse

It’s time to end this madness

Heaven help me now

Time for you to bite the dust

You monstrous Tantabus

Your nightmare reign’s not endless

Who will save you now?

The Tantabus belongs to Hasbro

Anyways, that’s all I have for now! As always, I’d like to end this post with a song. Because this post’s picture gives me a certain boost of willpower and confidence, and because Luna and the Tantabus are so heavily associated with nighttime, I decided to include this song (Lunar Republic all the way, bro!). Feel free to get pumped! As always, this is Baconforbreakfast426, signing off.
