Description
This is a character I'm planning on putting in a personal project. I did a lot of concepts and studies to try and get a design I'm happy with, so I decided to compile my favorite sketches of "Baba" into a single piece. I always would like your feedback!Related content

Well I need to work on cats is all I really meant. My cats never sit still very long, so it's hard to draw them. =3

Thats great man. Theres a lot of attitude there, she seems kinda stuck up and is the center of attention. I guess thats your impression of her huh. Thats great! This way you can let your frustration out from her not cuddling with you.
Your stuff is really improving, even though the early stuff i've seen is more then good. Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks, man! I still have a long ways to go in order to get where I want to be artistically.. And when I'm there I'm sure there's going to be even bigger goals.. Such is the curse of the artist, no?

You need to flip that cat some serious birdage... give him the finger...lol
Nice jobe, i never asked you this before erin, but do you use like a gesture sort of thing when you start? if you can understand that question.

yeah I do, actually.. I try to flesh out the overall piece really loosely and quickly, and then I work down the details. It's a method I'm trying to master because I feel it will help me in my animation. You should give it a shot, it might loosen up your characters' gestures!

It's awesome how changing a few of the lines here and there within the eyes really makes for either a more realistic portrayal, or a more stylized look. I can see some of that with some of the sketches here, alternating between the rounder pupil and closed in sockt/eyelids, as opposed to the suggestion of said areas. It's like mixing caligraphy with a 3D proportional representation of a body, face, etc. It reallys tands out for me in the second and fourth drawings on the upper portion (upper bust studies with the same perspective/angling of the head). The lines for the eyes are very nice, very easy to look at, but easy tools to convey emotion with a few strokes of the pen.
This is something that can obsess a character designer for a long time, which is good actually. There are a ton of possibilities, but it's up to the designer to figure on which ones in what proportions will gain that coveted title of "appealing". You've got alot of that going on with those bust studies here, the general flexibility of the features in question along with the easily-read linework. The upper furthest left drawing in red colerase and pen is my favorite.

Yeah, I'm really trying a lot of various approaches to her design.. Still not entirely sure what I'm going to stick with.. But I too am more inclined towards the top left ones as well..
Thanks for the nice critique! I'm glad you like it, man!

Very likable--amiable. Love the cartoon faces! On the three greyscales in the upper right-hand corner, the eyes are just a hair large, but if it's intentional, no worries. That would only be a prob with realism anyways! Again, masterful depiction of "Baba". Just a smashing riot!

The thick line on the upper eyelid really nails that diva-cat look and her eyebrows have such a realistic mass without looking masculine-heavy.

Great sketches of the kitty.... now, draw a standard schnauzer, and I'd be delighted! That walking weenie, I forget his name, you told me one, still rocks and makes me laugh!
I really like the expression in the upper left corner of this piece.

Thanks!
If you mean my avatar (the "walking weeine"), his name is Count Frank von Tasty! (How could you forget?!?)
I'm guessing you have a schnauzer, eh? Well, I'll have to try to get some dog sketches up sometime, to balance things out!

I like the cats in the middle, you put great expressions on them. You really look like you *love* that cat, don't you? Look kinda tired to. Did you ink in ballpoint again?

Thanks, I'm glad you like them! And, I admit, I do love all of my cats, even tho they don't always seem to love me..
Yeah, I do look tired in the one sketch, sometimes the cat doesn't "allow" me to get a full night's sleep.

This sketches are so cool! and may i say, perfect. I also have the kind of self-centered cat (well, 90% of them are that way), so i know what you mean when you said it keeps you up all night (your expression on the last drawing says it all, heh).

Man, if i know, waking me up at 4 in the morning because it wants to get out of the house, because it wants food or just to annoy me, leaving hairs everywhere, being in the bathroom just when i want to do my bussiness there, laying on top of some important papers... The usual stuff, heh.
Mabey i'll do some drawing soon

Oooo..did you draw from seeing a real cat? It looks like you did or tried getting it realistic at first to cartoony style. Nice work I love the one with the mouse in it's paw
I have ben doing concepts on a character myself. It's soo much fun to play with

Yep, this is indeed based on a real-life cat.. One with quite an attitude sometimes. (But even with the attitude, it's fun to draw.)
Glad you like 'em!
