I think I saw it said best once in a comment here on D.A. but I forget who said it, becoming an Alicorn is a bit like becoming a buddha in the MLP:FIM world, they ascend to that status when they gain some kind of enlightenment, Twilight understood the power of friendship, Cadence understood the power of love (which presumably means any kind of love, not just the romantic kind).
