Description
After a 3-decade run, Charles Martinet is officially hanging up his cap and resigning as Mario's voice actor in favor of being a series ambassador at Nintendo.
I sort of knew this day was coming, but it's still shocking nonetheless. Knowing Nintendo, though, they'll definitely have someone shadow Martinet so that they'll have a worthy backup voice for the event where Martinet retires for good, like how Matt Vogel shadowed Carroll Spinney for the role of Big Bird from Sesame Street. Perhaps we'll find out who that shadow is when Super Mario Bros. Wonder releases.
I wanted to share with you all a drawing I just did in regards to this news. I drew two Marios; the left represents the one Martinet has voiced (I've tried recreating his N64 appearance to the best of my ability) and the right represents a more modern incarnation, combining elements from The Super Mario Bros. Movie (collars on his shirt and front overall pocket) and Super Mario Bros. Wonder (the Wonder Seed). The former is handing over his cap to the latter, as a metaphor of the old generation passing the torch over to the new generation.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvhnxf… And here's a video I was listening to while drawing this. It's a GamerSpawn interview from back in the early 2010's, which is the first video I've watched specifically about Martinet.
As someone who's been a fan of Mario for as long as I can remember, I want to thank Martinet for being with the franchise through thick & thin for all these years and for giving entire generations of gamers memories that are destined to be eternal. Take it easy, Paisano.
