A family tree of Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish kings at the time of the formation of the Kalmar Union , in reference to the city of Kalmar, site Queen Margaret I's grand-nephew 1397 coronation. The three kingdoms remained separate and sovereign states under a single monarch. Such a personal union began after death of Olaf II, who inherited the crowns of both his grandfathers. His mother, Margaret became regent of Denmark and Norway, and later Sweden after aiding a rebellion against her late husband's nephew. She kept those thrones warm for her grand-nephew, Eric of Pomerania.
