Description
The streets of the city seemed no different than those of any other large metropolitan area of the eastern United States. Streets filled with people en masse walking, strutting, and shuffling to various destinations and places. As waves of traffic moved forward in frenzied race to see who could get to the next traffic signal first. The cityscape filled with the familiar symphony of voices, motorized engines, car horns, adding a dissonant soundtrack to their obviously buys lives. Above it all the distant sun glaring down, its heat creating a haze that hung languidly in the air, another typical day in the big city. But soon all this would change, irrevocably and forever.
Weather patterns were shifting, storms becoming more frequent, more intense. The world was also becoming a hotter and drier place. Much of this was attributed to a term called “global warming” brought on by the actions of man, and while this was correct in theory, the fact of the matter held a far different truth. While fundamental laws of science and physics were being bent and broken, few took notice. The age of materialism and science held far too much sway over their minds. It was much easier to sit comfortably at home consuming the pablum of television, congregating in chatrooms and cyber villages or playing with innocuous gadgets and games then to see what was happening all around them. Ignorance was indeed bliss.
Far away, yet closer than realized, from the mundane madness of everyday life there was a stirring, a rustling, an awakening, taking place. There were powerful forces coalescing and awakening, far older than even the prehistoric beasts which roamed about the physical earth during the age of dinosaurs. Hidden from the conscious mind of profane man, these forces were, yet communicating with those sensitive enough to hear their secret callings. Their messages weren’t heard on nightly news programs or upon ubiquitous billboards plastered high above this world’s highways and roads. No they had no need or desire to communicate with humans using “creations of mankind” because they were not of creation or mankind, but rather beyond and alien to each.
These forces insinuated themselves into their adepts consciousness surreptitiously, seeping like an inky ichor into the minds, spirit and souls of those who listened. In dreams they would appear, filling the dreamer with nightmarish visions, that over time became things of beauty and were anticipated. Or in those who refused these “gifts” horror, dread also sometimes madness, death or disease. Their communiqués also came forth in ways such as visual arts, music and the written word. Such was their way, to usurp the brain’s creativity and feed it with their powers and wills. It mattered little to them what effects they had on their messengers, for these being had news to deliver, a time of destiny to fulfill and that time was soon approaching.
The entities manifesting all of this were creative beings, highly intelligent, holding wisdom lost aeons before Atlantis took its last breath, before Mu was swallowed by an angry sea or in times antecedent of the sun or earth itself. To them a millennium is a blink of an eye, the “big bang” just occurred and the human lifespan infinitesimal as a fly’s life is to us. Various avatars, both known and unknown, knowingly and in ignorant bliss (which in some cases of course was best) have delivered their wisdom, knowledge, glimpses of their power and how it might be wielded, to humanity. For even though they are our friends, that friendship is in remote, hidden ways and not a friend as such is considered in modern society.
Some of them sleep, dreaming, while others are more active, present, influencing the energies and polarities surrounding and controlling the reality that the human race has created. That reality is of course a skin of illusion covering the true reality which exists and awaits. And soon, like a mirror, humanity’s world would shatter, burn as if a photograph set aflame, bleed like written words submerged in water and become a mangled veil, shredded by a relentless torrent of black winds.
Beyond these torrents of interstellar currents are stars stretched out in a vast array of explosions, fiery cataclysms which devour one another in a flurry of silver flames, indigo flashes and spiraling dust that sparkled as if diamonds of light within a web of spun silk. Each star had a purpose, each space between the stars even moreso. For within these spaces were invisible gateways that linked stars to planets and worlds to worlds, realities to realities. There were an infinite number of these.
Yet in actuality, only one, for each space was a mirror of another space, which in actuality was only one space, yet disguised as many. These false gateways, were traps and decoys, for when the forces of creation chose to imprison the primal forces which in fact had created creation, yet were not a part of it, they left only one gateway in which these forces could escape. But what wasn’t known was that when the stars were in a certain position, the “true” gateway would reveal itself, and during that time the Cthonic, chaotic, primordial entities could flood through and re-enter the world of creation. Each planet and the space associated with them would then become further gateways of egress for even more of the hordes to break through.
And upon this day, while the mundane reality unfolded in its usual patterns below, those who chose to look up from the typical afternoon street scene, saw what appeared to be a storm rolling in. What those eyes which peered skyward saw was storm indeed, yet unlike one they’d ever witnessed before.
Abruptly the sky turned so dark that all light seemed to be absorbed and evaporated. Most thought the darkening of the day was just another late summer storm moving in, but those who did look up, saw the most luridly beautiful sights, and probably thought perhaps, the water supply of the city had been dosed with high levels of psychedelics. A few just blinked, shook their heads and thought to themselves, ‘I haven’t had one of these in years,’ thinking the effects of previously ingested hallucinogens taken several years earlier had re-manifested, but what they were experiencing was no flashback, more like a returning.
An oily, grayish mist began falling. In the distance streaks of a greenish hued lightning could be seen. But this lightning was different, it seemed alive and breathing, increasing in size, then rapidly decreasing. At times it also spun around like a gyrating top, or a dragon chasing its own tail. Lightning usually only struck once, but this lightning flashed like neon signs, on and off with great rapidity, or sometimes each flash lasted several minutes. There was no thunder to be heard, just an eerie silence.
Then the sounds of wings flapping, first distant and faint, then growing in speed and intensity.
