- HISTORY::
Ellis was born a slave on Saint Kitts, a tiny Caribbean island dedicated to growing sugar cane. From an early age all he knew was backbreaking labor and the sting of the lash. The only comfort he had in this life was his brother, Isaac. Sometimes, Ellis would try to ask Isaac about his parents, for he often wondered about them. Isaac would just shrug and mumble something about them being dead.
Throughout his years of working in the field, he began to notice that he was being watched by an old Sceptile woman who worked in the acre beside his own. Rumor had it that she practiced weird rituals alone in her hut, so she was feared and shunned by owners and slaves alike. Like everyone else, Ellis chose to ignore the queer woman's eerie presence.
The day Ellis felt true hate for the first time was the day Isaac was beaten within an inch of his life for not working fast enough. The master was a cruel man, and chose to use Isaac as an example for any other slaves who dared lag behind. Late that night while Ellis tended to his older brother's wounds, they decided to do the unthinkable. They began to plot their escape. All they needed was an opportunity...
During Ellis's 16th year, a terrible drought had set in, making the crops hard to grow and the grass dry and brittle. On a calm hot night, Ellis and Isaac hid behind their home and set their plan into motion. “Meet me by the nearest dock at midnight, no sooner, no later!” Isaac said. “We’ll grab a boat and get the hell out of here!” The brothers went their separate ways. Ellis grabbed the nearest lantern and smashed it on a nearby slave hut, setting it ablaze. Flames ate at the dried wood and the cinders and sparks quickly spread. Soon the entire village was engulfed in flames. Now in all the pandemonium, Ellis turned to flee the plantation. But before he could escape, the remains of a nearby burning hut suddenly collapsed on top of him, pinning him to the ground. The searing ash and cinders burned through his shirt and set his body on fire. He writhed and did his best to break free, but to no avail. His world began to melt away, and he closed his eyes, welcoming death.
He awoke in the nearby woods to odd chanting and a dull throbbing pain. There above him crouched the Sceptile woman, mumbling over him and clasping an old piece of cord. He flexed his hands and touched his aching chest, feeling bandages on them. The burn wounds were miraculously healed, but when he looked under the bandages, his skin was ragged and scarred.
The sound of his movements caught the Sceptile's attention. Immediately she jerked him to his feet and handed him the cord. "Take dis! Go now! Quickly! Before dey come!" The angry shouts of the slave owner could be heard in the distance. He wanted to ask the woman why she had saved him, or if she could come with him, but she simply shoved him away, saying “I’ll tell dem you’re dead to keep dem at bay. Go, now!” She hissed as she took the burnt remains of his shirt in her hands, fear in her eyes as the voice of the master grew ever nearer.
He ran deep onto the forest as fast as his legs could carry him and kept running until he fell to his knees exhausted in the middle of the night. Panting, he looked at the moon. It was well past midnight, and his heart sank. He couldn’t go back towards the port yet, for it was in back in the other direction, towards the plantation. The master was near the woods searching for runaways, and he felt too weak to flee if he were seen. All he could do was rest and pray that his brother was safe.
The next morning, he tied the plain piece of cord around his ankle and ventured back through the woods. He worked his way around the damaged plantation, careful to stay hidden. By midday he had reached the port and was quick to wash up and steal some decent clothes for a disguise. Already his vines had grown long enough to hang over his eyes, so hopefully no one would be able to recognize him as a runaway slave who had just been caught up in a nasty fire. He was able to successfully grab a ride on a fishing boat under the lie that "he had a message to deliver for his master," and went on his way to Tortuga to search for his brother.
Ellis spent the next year of his life searching for his sibling, traveling from town to town and stealing to survive. He would listen closely for any information pertaining to Saint Kitts slaves, but never heard or saw anything of an older Tangrowth. A glimmer of an idea began to worm its way into his mind. What if... his brother wasn't on land? He could search the seas! But then there was a problem: who would let a Pokemon like him onto a ship? He kept going down the list of sea occupations, and he decided that no group would ever accept him... Except one.
Now he's on the search for a pirate captain who's looking to recruit. His only hope is to find a captain who knows the sea like the back of his hand. There have been rumors floating about of a sea god who is in search of new crew members. If that's the case, then maybe the captain might know something of the whereabouts of Ellis’s lost brother...

- CLOTHING OF CHOICE:: Ellis has gotten rid of his little blue long vest for something much more comfortable. It's a big baggy jacket that's much too big for him, but he likes it for its size and for the extra pockets inside. He still has his chemise shirt underneath, as well as the bandages on his chest and hands. He won't part with his dark gloves any time soon. He still wears some nice baggy dark pants and boots as well. His daggers are tied by the rope around his waist and are often kept hidden.
- ACCESSORIES::
-Two cutting knives = Being a tangrowth means that Ellis needs to keep his vines from overgrowing. So he always has a pair of knives to trim up his vines when they get too unruly.
-Cutlass = Ellis has gotten rid of his old machete, fearing that it would be a hint of his past. Now he keeps a simple cutlass at his side.
-Woven cord = There is the simple woven cord given to him by the Sceptile woman. It appears to be made of regular rope and seems to serve no real purpose. He keeps it tied safely around his ankle, so it is hidden from sight within his left boot.
- PERSONALITY:: Ellis's new found freedom might have gotten to his head. Just a little bit. He loves being respected and will be loyal and friendly to any who are kind to him. He is generally a rather serious Pokemon, but when around friends, he'll kick back and have fun when there's time for it. Don't get him around any hateful Pokemon though. Unless said hateful Pokemon is extremely dangerous or threatening, Ellis won't hesitate to bite back with a retort.
-CURRENT MOVESET::
Confusion
AncientPower
Mega Drain
Vine Whip
- ABILITY:: Chlorophyll
- TALENTS::
- He can cut as accurately as a surgeon with a machete, though he prefers to keep away from them now.
- He won't admit to it, but he's got a nice tenor singing voice.
- Being a Tangrowth, he's quite hardy and can take a lot of hits.
- Despite the common knowledge that Tangrowths are dim-witted, Ellis is rather smart, but a little naive at times.
- Not necessarily a talent, but more of an advantage. Ellis can lose a limb, but it can grow back within a week or two.
- Another slight advantage. Ellis will not be able to bleed out as easily as other Pokemon. Being part plant, his blood is also partially made of sap, so it will not flow as easily. This helps to cut down the risk of bleeding to death in case he loses a limb. But only slightly.
- OTHER INFORMATION::
= While reading the official entries on Tangrowths, I found out that those Pokemon are great candidates for slaves. They are thought to be dim witted, their arms can be cut off and grow back, and being a Grass type, they can probably get some of their energy from the sun, so not a lot of food needs to be wasted on them.
= Ellis's hair is the equivalent of curly dreadlocks. While curly dreadlocks aren't naturally curly, Tangrowths have curly vines. So I think it works. :3
= Because of that arm regrowing aspect and I'm a horrible person, I'll probably always give someone permission to lob off one of Ellis's arms or hands. Let's not do it too often though, because it still hurts like a b*tch to grow back.
= Ellis's older brother Isaac is about 28 as of 1700.

A few fun facts I learned while reading up on Slaves and Pirates:
-Slaves often got last names depending on what their occupations were. Ellis's father worked on the mills. Hence the last name Miller.
-Pirates did also sack places and ships that had natural goods such as sugar, cotton, etc. They weren't all out for gold and money alone.
