I would have loved to have seen this fight in real life!
My guess is that the bird in the background was prey and one buzzard came down to eat it, followed by the other and the two duked it out on th spot.

We got our own buzzard rivalries over here but the turkey vultures tend to be solitary and are chased away by the smaller black vultures because the latter attack in teams.

This is such and amazing and incredible photo, showing both birds of prey in the moment of battle. Their lives on the line to fight the everyday struggle to survive. Amazing.
