I find this is a good depiction of the panic of being stuck far down in a really intractable quagmire! There is something 'old school' in the slightly foreboding smudgy grayness of the page [erasures, in large part, showing maybe unintended 'atmosphere-creating' benefits of ghosts of trial and error!](I am ignoring the print-through of what seems to be text), the suggestion of being in the forest and alone, and a sense that the bog's depth well might take her all the way in. Lily pads do well in organic mire and they give this swamp a deceptively pretty touch of serene deepness. I like the relation of her exertion and the real ways thick but still-yielding quagmire behaves. A 'donut' of displaced mire mounts around the sinking woman and the masses of mud are slow to move back in against her as she rocks back and about in her strenuous travail. Every oscillation of her trunk imprints the gluey soil line on her uniform each time around, then higher and higher above her waist. She heard that by introducing air into the depths by torsioning herself loose, she may be able to reduce the suction but, unfortunately, she is swallowed so deeply that her solo efforts are not enough of an ally for her to gain any freedom from her captor. So slowly but surely she keeps sinking! I like her one arm pulling out a bit but with the muck beseeching it back in above its elbow, and the other extricated, displaying how extremely gluey this quagmire is! This is a classic sketch of Jade in real distress.
