Not that Yue’s free time in her days as a RedShowMag model was plentiful to begin with, but her bid to turn a dubious real estate acquisition around and down a path that she hopes would make a positive contribution to the lives of other disabled people meant that the weeks following the deal being struck proper were the busiest she ever remembers being, perhaps right up there with the sleepless nights of crunching away at her graduation thesis a few years back when walking was still a thing she was able to do.

This morning and the day before it seemed to be when the workload was at its peak, as it was time for Yue to take the cardboard boxes of architect plans, tax filings and other legal documentation as it pertains to the compound, sort through all of it by the dozens and reorder them by order of importance. Suffice to say that it was a gargantuan slog, one that the living room’s coffee table proved too undersized to let her take on smoothly, thus she settled for the distant second best option: To do it all straight on the floor, with her questionably comfortable wheelboard as her only manner of seating. And so she gets to work.

An hour later, Yue made good progress only to be interrupted by the buzzing of her fancy foldable phone. When she saw the contact’s name on its screen she knew that waiting one second more to pick up was not an option.

“Yes, father?”

“My daughter, what is keeping you from responding to last week’s E-Mail from me to you? Is this any way to treat your elderly parents?”

“Certainly not. Please accept my apologies.”

“You’re forgiven, my dear. But tell me, what has gone on that made you forget this time around?”

“It was a busy month…”

“Busy having a thousand hopelessly thirsty men gawk at you on that dirty magazine?”

“No longer. I am now writing for them instead. I advertised myself as a photographer for hire. There is so much more going on right now.”

“Oh, you’re making changes in your life? Please daughter, tell me more. Make this old man more proud of his sweetheart Yue than he already is!”

“I appreciate your faith in me, father. But you see, this isn’t so much about me as it is about others…I am working on something that I think would give people like me something to keep them going, something to look forward to.”

“People like you?”

“People with disabilities. A place where they and I can gather in and brighten each other’s days through what they do best…Arts, crafts, writing…”

“So, a social club of sorts for disabled creatives? A most noble pursuit if there ever was one! I wonder however, how do you plan on funding this project? Surely, none of this is paying for itself.”

“I think I have it all sorted out more or less, father. It’s an old abandoned industrial compound that dropped in value low enough for me to easily save up for it and buy it. As I speak, I am currently getting the paperwork in order.”

“That’s nice! But will it be enough?”

“Of course not. As I told you, I stepped down from modelling to writing articles instead and took on a freelance photographer thing. Additionally, I plan on selling this house and moving out to a smaller one.”

“Is moving house really a good idea? Think again.”

“Father…I don’t mean to call your wisdom into question, but I stand to gain from it twofold: It will help me raise just that much more money for the project while also providing me with a living space where things are closer together, which is a rather big deal for wheelchair users such as myself.”

“So be it then, daughter. I hope from the bottom of my heart that it all goes your way.”

“So do I, father. So do I.”

“Yue, my daughter…”

“Yes, father?”

“Thank you for putting my worries about your future at ease. As a reward I will, in the coming days, wire a humble sum of money to your savings account that I believe will give your endeavors the push they need.”

“But, father-”

“Just accept it and enjoy the good things to come.”

“Very well, father. Thank you for being by my side every step of the way!”

“It’s nothing my ray of sunshine, it’s nothing. But for now, best of luck.”

The old man ended the call on those words, leaving Yue to look up at the ceiling and sigh as she thinks to herself before resuming her chore: “Dad, I love you and all but I’m not sure I’m really worth bleeding yourself dry over me, I’m doing just fine!”

Fifteen minutes later, her phone buzzes again. This time, it’s a new number. She picks up.

“Hello?”

“I was made to understand that I can reach a photographer for hire known as Yue at this number. Is that right?”

“Yes. How may I help?”

“By meeting me at the Aether Glow Estate, where I reside. It is a simple photoshoot session over a simple backdrop. Ask around if you do not know where that is, you should have little trouble finding it either way.”

“And when can we meet?”

“Any time before sunset. I am in no hurry.”

“Okay, I can do that. Thank you for your call.”

“My pleasure.”
