Description Born from a conversation between and me about lipped or unlipped sabertooths. I already knew that theory but I decided to reserch it more in detail. So I red 's very interesting article where he explains the many reasons why sabertooths were likely completely or partially lipped, like tooth hydration and protection. Mark Witton in his blog pointed out that a considerable distance from the margin of the skull and lower jaw should be considered strong candidates for permanent exposure, so I decided to choose the semi-lipped version. This model is heavely based on 'one, with Mauricio Antòn's anatomical diagrams and clouded leopards as reference: this sabertooth has big upper lips inspired by those of clouded leopards that cover most of the tooth, while a fleshy sheath fitts the remainder of the tooth on its lower jaw, providing saliva on the tooth's crown. The fleshy flange is based on dog lips and also clouded leopards chin, that is strangely wide. I based the reconstruction on Smilodon's skull, but it's not ment to be a precise genera and it's supposed to be a very generic smilodontine sabertooth.
