I used Paint Shop Pro 7 and a ton of layers. The galaxy in the background is the Sculptor Galaxy (digitized and colorized) with a few edits.
Basically, I just erased a good portion of the moon, then drew in the area of the broken part.
I added the galaxy because it looked like it was missing something--I think it adds a lot to the overall image.
