Description
I'm pretty new to DeviantArt, and people have been very kind so far.So, here's my cel-shading tutorial. Really basic, it's my first one and probably not very good/a little confusing, but I really tried to make sense, I swear. If you have any questions about something in the tutorial, please put them in the comments or message me and I'll try to clarify!
If you'd like to see a bigger version of the finished image from this tutorial, here it is -->
Hopefully the tutorial is useful to somebody!
Thanks,
-Jen
Edit: Thank you so much for the DD! I'm honored. I would have never expected to get one on my old FMA artwork, haha. It's been over a year since I made this tutorial, but I hope you fine people still find it to be helpful.

You have no idea how much I appreciate this tutorial. You actually bother to go into detail about layers and the tools you use. Somtimes I get "step one I drew this step two I colored it and step 3 its done and I wont explain HOW YAYYY fave me now!" Im going to try this out right now---Right...Right after homwork. UH. Heh heh yeah. : ) and whats even better is you used a picture of Edward Elric. Win~

Ah man, I'm so glad you find it useful! It was my first tutorial so I didn't really know what was going on. XD Hopefully it's not too confusing!
I hope it's able to help you out somehow! Yes do your homework first, GOSH. Oh yeah, I love me some Edward Elric. He's about the only anime character I can draw and color very consistently. c:

WOW! Really awesome tutorial!
And my favourite thing is the fact that it's with a photoshop program I HAVE!
It's hard to find tutorials for Elements XP
Great work! I wanna try and apply this colouring style to my art sometime!

Thank you so much! I agree, Elements tends to get ignored...but it really is a great, streamlined program--definitely my program of choice! I hope the tutorial is useful to your lovely art--I'd love to see anything you did with this sort of coloring! <3

Really amazing! You've got the art and coloring style down pat. I don't have Photoshop, but I'll definitely refer back to this for ideas. Thanks!

Thank you! Yeah, the tutorial is for Photoshop but I think it can be helpful for traditional art as well. The principles also work in most layer-based programs, like Gimp and Paintshop. I'm glad you liked it!

this is a pretty good tutorial! this is basically how I colour my pictures, except they turn out worse because 1) I have no tablet, and 2) I don't have Photoshop. just paint(dot)NET.

Thank you very, very uber much!!!
it was very clear, and I'll be faving it so I can always find it and use it.

This tutorail was incredibly helpful. I had only just begun to use multpile layers on PS (around 3 or 4), because I just couldn't get my head around how they worked with colour! This helped so much, so thanks!

I'm glad it helped you out! It took me forever to figure out layers--it was like this crazy, un-grasp-able concept to me. But once you start working with them, it really starts to click. They're soooo very useful.
