(I just noticed that the date and time is wrong on the exif data. It was taken on the 16th of June(Australian time) at about 6:30 am).
Australia was pretty well placed for this eclipse. The weather was perfect, so I got up about an hour before it all started to setup the telescope and various cameras.
This picture was taken during the darkest part of the eclipse, when the moon passed almost directly through the centre of the Earths shadow. The colour is caused by all the sunrises and sunsets on Earth reflecting off the moon (Edit: ok, I was in a bit of a rush to post this, so i'll phrase this part better now- The red coloring arises because sunlight reaching the Moon must pass through a long and dense layer of the Earthβs atmosphere, where it is scattered. Shorter wavelengths are more likely to be scattered by the air molecules and the small particles, and so by the time the light has passed through the atmosphere, the longer wavelengths dominate. This resulting light we perceive as red. This is the same effect that causes sunsets and sunrises to turn the sky a reddish color; an alternative way of considering the problem is to realize that, as viewed from the Moon, the Sun would appear to be setting (or rising) behind the Earth.

Note (23/06/2011): The support for this photo has been overwhelming. I'm truly humbled that so many people have found enjoyment in it. If you comment on this photo (or any of my other photos for that matter), I will reply, but please understand that I just can not get around to thanking you all for the favs. I would never get off this computer to take other photos. Please consider this one big THANK YOU!!!

why could anyone be angry with this?
Beautiful, but I couldn't see it in the UK it was to low, and it was cloundy and later rainy. I dont think we'll see it again in december either. Oh well. You cant see everything...

Thank you They are angry that they couldn't see the eclipse for themselves, not angry with the photo. I'm sorry to hear that you had bad weather. The December one will be eclipsed when the moon rises [link] in the UK. I hope you have better weather then.

This is a really good photo! Very nice! the moon went really dark on Namibia, [link] Made an animation with it (Though my pics aint as good as yours, that's for sure. ) The whole thing lasted about 2 hours. It looked amazing.

Thank you very much You made a pretty cool animation there. May I ask how you did it, please? (The animation, not the photos) I might be able to do something similar with the other photos I have from this eclipse.

You're very welcome! And thank you!
I did it with photoshop CS4. Though, there are online animators too, if that would be easier (Though I'm not sure where that one site is).
It's different, but it does the thing. ^^ And it would be smaller too (Though, mine is rather too big anyway) ^^ Another option is if you e-mail the photos to me, I would animate it for you (And I can swear that I won't steal if that concerns you
)
And no credit required.

Thanks for getting back to me I'll have a think about it and maybe have a play around with what software i've got, to see if I can do it or not. I'll let you know if I need your help. Thanks for the offer. I know you would respect my work, and if I descide to go down that path, I would definately credit you.

Glad to hear you did. The time on the exif data is wrong, because my old camera that I used for this, I didn't realise had the wrong date and time set until I started using it again. It was taken at about 6:30 am Australian Eastern Time. Brazil is about 12 hours behind our time, so that would mean it was about 6:30 pm on the 15th of June for you.

Great job!

I have a ton of comments to reply to, but I just wanted to clarify this one straight away. There is NO photomanipulation here what so ever, apart from resizing the image to upload and signing my name to the bottom right corner. I used a telescope and computerised mount (total cost- over $6000(Australian))that tracks the movement of the moon to take this photo. What you see is what I saw straight out of the camera. I have the RAW files to prove it.
