I didn't have a clue what RIFT was, and now that I do I don't have any intention of getting into it, but this image just makes me lament for what I might be missing...
I love everything about this. One of the things I couldn't help but notice about a lot of the other colossi (not that I've been keeping up with the contest in general, but I digress!) is that they fail to really make clear the scale of the beasts by introducing something familiar for us to compare it to. That's clearly not the case here - that thing is MASSIVE. You've got the distant city and the river at the bottom right that's not even close to the size of one of its legs, and even at that apparent distance it towers over the rider in the extreme foreground.
You also convey, or at least I perceive, a huge sense of urgency in the picture. There's only two people in that image but their horses are both in full gallop. I can only imagine they're just a couple of the hundreds upon hundreds of others in the plains around them on their way to eventually put this creature back from whence it came... at a terrible cost.
I also just love all the little details you've put into it. You can see snow blizzarding in clouds from the top of its legs and body and the blasts of dirt from where it's stepping. All the textures in the image are wonderful. I'm still not actually quite sure if that creature even has a recognizable face that I'm missing somehow, but I don't even care.
The one thing that I find confusing here is just the dust cloud below its 'mouth' in the image. I'm not exactly sure what it's there for but it looks to me like its mouth is having a vacuum effect of some sort - but the cloud is clearly on the ground behind it whereas its mouth is near its front. Sort of like a Penrose Cube kind of effect. It's quite jarring in an otherwise beautifully-crafted image.
